How to get a boob job through your insurance after WLS?

Recommended Posts

I know skin removal can possibly be covered through your insurance after WLS. Has anybody been able to get a boob job done after WLS and have the insurance pay for it, and if so what did you have to do in order to do it?

We submitted to insurance with documents of rashes and skin breakdown and it still wasn't covered. They had very strict requirements--for breasts you had to be removing a certain amount of weight (in grams). For the pannus it had to pass the pubic bone.

Everyone's plan is different. Some have specific exclusions for skin removal, some have explicit requirements like mine, some just want documentation of physical limitations/issues/complications. Check with your policy to find out what they require!

Everyone's plan is different. Mine states that I had to have had a complete mastectomy in order to get coverage.

So far, nothing has been covered and my pannus reached my pubic bone.

39 days and counting......

I wanted to have a reduction... not because i have deflated boob, but because i didn't lose any boobs and now im a 34H with a size 4-6 bottom...

My insurance denied two tries.....

But it all depends on your insurance and coverage plan.

Good luck

It's usually very difficult to get insurance to cover most post weight loss skin surgeries. I've heard of panniculectomy's being covered, usually only after many documentations of infections and rashes, and sometimes brachioplasty's. I've never heard breast surgery being covered.

Insurances pretty much suck.

My insurance didn't cover anything. It didn't cover my sleeve surgery and it doesn't cover any plastic surgery besides mastectomy. Makes me mad. I'm saving them thousands of dollars because I no longer have the health issues I had before but they won't cover anything even after I've reached and maintained at my goal weight.

I suggest you start saving or make sure your credit is good enough to finance the procedure. I went to Mexico for my sleeve and it was $4,500. I stayed local for my Tummy Tuck and breast lift and it was $8,400.

my insurance two jobs ago covered the band.... but no Boobs. last job... nothing and this job, im not sure ill have to look into it. but im sure it doesn't.

I would recommend you start having your doctor document any and everything like Babbs said, hardly any covers boobs. All depends on your plans coverage.

I had to pay for my TT out of pocket 8800..

I have a very extensive family history of cancer and I'm BRACA positive so I plan to have them removed and replaced. The insurance covers 100% because of that. They wouldn't cover it otherwise. I'm having wls so that I can not only feel and look better but so that the mastectomy and recon go smoothly.

Were you able to find a doctor in Mexico?

My insurance paid for breast lift and panniculectomy. I don't know what the doctors office said. They just said it was approved. I didn't ask any questions lol. This was after seeing about 7+ plastic surgeons. Their office wouldn't submit it or they flat out didn't take the insurance

Hey, I'm BRACA1 positive also, I got tested after my mom passed from breast cancer when I was 17. Insurance will cover the mastectomy and the complete rebuild?? If so that's exciting news! Lol

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
