Feeling discouraged!

Recommended Posts

I had the sleeve 6 weeks ago. The first 4 weeks I lost 15 pounds but in the last 2 weeks the scale hasn't moved!!!! I've read many posts on stalls but I barely had the surgery. I'm eating 70-85 grams of Protein a day, under 20 carbs and no sugar. WTH!! Any advice!! Feeling desperate and discouraged. Help!

Still pre-op, but have heard from tons and tons of people that they hit their first stall around Week 3, so that's probably where you are. They all suggest upping your Water / Protein or calories to jump start the loss again! Good luck!

Totally and completely normal at your stage. Here's why it happens to 99% of us. Keep getting your Protein and fluids and it will pass.

A "stall" a few weeks after surgery is not uncommon, and here's why.

Our bodies use glycogen for short term energy storage. Glycogen is not very soluble, but it is stored in our muscles for quick energy -- one pound of glycogen requires 4 lbs. of Water to keep it soluble, and the average glycogen storage capacity is about 2 lbs. So, when a patient is not getting in enough food, the body turns first to stored glycogen, which is easy to break down for energy. Then when 2 lbs. of glycogen is used a patient will also lose 8 lbs. of Water that was used to store it -- voila -- the "easy" 10 lbs. that most people lose in the first week of a diet.

However, when the body stays in a caloric deficit state the body starts to realize that this is not a short-term problem. Then the body starts mobilizing fat from adipose tissue and burning fat for energy. But the body also realizes that fat can't be used for short bursts of energy. So, it starts converting some of the fat into glycogen, and rebuilding the glycogen stores. As it puts back the 2 lbs. of glycogen into the muscle, 8 lbs. of water has to be stored with it to keep it soluble. So, even though the patient might still be losing energy content to their body, the weight will not go down or it might even gain for a while as the retention of water dissolves the glycogen that is being reformed and stored.

I hit a big stall at 3 weeks out!! It lasted for 2 1/2 weeks and started to move again. Its very frustrating but it will pass. I hit another one around the 8th week but only lasted that week then had a big loss after it so hang in there ;-)

What is your preop weight. People who have a lower bmi tend to lose slower. This was my doctors response to me when i asked why I had only lost 20lbs in a month.

Ok. We are about in the same boat. (My boat is a few lbs heavier) be patient. If you are following the plan, there is no way you won't lose a significant amount of weight. <---my doctor and NUT's words.

I wouldn't say I've stalled because a stall is more than a few days long. I've done days without losing. I was hospitalized and given fluids for several days gaining 9lbs of Water weight and didn't lose for nearly a week after that. I've just been slow. Started out losing like a bat outta hell the first week but it slowed. I'm ok with it but also slightly discouraged. I need to stay off the scale. I have a bad habit of stepping on it every time I go in the bathroom.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
