Need a buddy/mentor please :)

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I am 6 weeks post-op and I could really use a buddy or mentor to walk me through this process.

I am 47 and my VSG surgery was on 8/10/16. I am having some issues and I could really use some help from someone who has been through the process.

Thank you & God Bless,

Dana

You can PM me.

A PM is a private message, like an email to one person versus a thread like this that everyone can read. You can ask specific questions on this thread and I and anyone else reading it can reply. In a PM only the person you send it to can reply.

How are you doing so far?

As of Monday I will be seven weeks I feel a little more normal because I am able to eat however I am still trying to embrace myself for the hairloss.. I always get my protien and Vitamins however some days are harder than others. I really think the first 4 plus weeks is the emotional part of the procedure. I myself seal with anxiety and had really hard time because I couldn't eat couldn't smoke couldn't have a drink and was really left with my emotions.

It is so hard the first few weeks. I remember watching the food Network while at home recovering the first week post op and feeling so sad and sorry for myself like I would never get to eat again. I'm glad each week is getting a little easier and so proud that are following your plan and not using food or alcohol to deal with things. That is an emotional challenge for us all and where the saying on here that "they operate on our bellies and not our brains" comes from as we all learn to deal with our emotions. Following the post op plan/guidelines helped me a lot the first few months because it kept me focused. I kept a whiteboard to track my Water and Vitamins early on. Keep up the good work!

I just need someone to bounce ideas off, and to make sure that I am not sabotaging myself by doing the wrong things or eating the wrong foods.

This is long enough that you should go into your MD. In the meantime, getting all your fluids in is critically important, ceasing all narcotics (if you are still taking any pain meds from surgery), and as others have mentioned, a stool softener. For me, Miralax was ineffective. I took Dulcolax. We eat so little initially that infrequent BMs are normal. No BM however is not normal so you should be seen to make sure you are not impacted or something else is going on.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
