Anyone else a fast eater? I am 14 days post op and just started puree/blended foods. My papers say it should take me 90 minutes to eat but really it only takes me half an hour at most....I need to slow down. Any pointers would help.

Hello!

I was taught to take 30 minutes to eat my meals. My husband will remind me to slow down and chew chew chew.

Good luck in your journey.

90 minutes? Which surgery did you have?

If you had RNY, your pouch empties after 30 minutes so although they want you to take your time, they don't want you to ever take longer than 30 minutes because then you end up eating more because your pouch is emptying again.

I believe the sleeve is the same.

That being said, the longest I can take to eat is 15 minutes and that is pushing it. This is one of the harder rules for me and even now 2 years later I find myself eating too fast and not chewing my food well enough. The problem with that is I end up eating a few bites and getting that nasty chest pain which means I either ate too fast or swallowed something too big. Once that happens my meal is over and I cannot get my food in.

Then I end up eating something a little later and it throws my whole day off.

Why is it so darn hard to remember to eat slow and chew well. I remember it after my chest hurts. LOL!

This becomes a bigger issue when you are back eating whole foods again.

It's been awhile, but I think I was told 20-30 minutes as well.

They gave me a small plastic spoon in the hospital to eat with. I hate eating with plastic spoons. So I bought one made out of metal which was the same size. That is what I eat with. It helps to slow down my intake because I am a fast gobbler. I am now 3 years post-op. And that is what I still use.

I had RNY, Djmohr thanks for your information. My papers say two tablespoons every 15 minutes. I am just eating with a baby spoon for now. ????

I am not on purées yet, but based on how quickly I drink I am worried about this, too.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
