Possible band issues

Recommended Posts

I have had the band for 9 years. Fell off the wagon years ago. Trying to get back on track and had a band fill at the end of July. Hurt like the dickens. Still hurting. Is this normal. It has never hurt when getting a fill.

Go to doc ASAP IMHO. Maybe nothing but I had pain develop with mine and it ended up being an erosion with a dangerous internal infection...

@@AgentSmith, I asked at a support group the other night what, if any, symptoms exist if erosion is the issue. I was told that one sign may be pain around the port site, which has become infected by germs migrating from the site of erosion. Was your pain around the port?

My pain was not located specifically at the port necessarily. My erosion wasn't at the port either. Mine was my actual band that had eroded my stomach. This caused a major infection. The pain was the infection. To be honest I couldn't really distinguish other than to say it hurt very much in my abdomen and it came in fast. I ended up having my band removed via an emergency surgery the day after I went to the ER.

Just FYI in case it's useful, I was banded in Sept 2010. My start weight was 330. Lost 130lbs in approx 10 months. I remained stable until erosion (Sept 2012) and for another three years after that.

Following a significant life change I've regained around 60lbs in the last 12-16 months. I'm currently at day 5 of my pre-op for a VSG I'm having on Aug 25. Everyone's experience is different but for me the band worked very well. Without it I succeeded for a while but eventually had issues keeping things in line. I'm confident the sleeve will help me succeed once again. I hope this contextual information can be helpful. Any questions or anything just let me know.

All the best

Please let us know what happens. Us bandsters are still here and always interested and concerned when one of us has an issue.

Yes, I was referring to the band eroding the tissue. When I asked the other night about symptoms, what I'd heard elswhere was confirmed in part: That often there is no pain and, unless endoscopy is indicated, erosion may not be detected for a long time. It was also said the other night by the NP taking questions that infection caused at the band may travel down the pike to the port and vicinity. That came as a big surprise to me.

I began to explore sleeve because I was suspecting that my band had gasped its last breath. It does seem to have life yet, though, for which I'm grateful. If the band had to be removed, I'd hope tha sleeve would be covered by insurance, but my preference above that is to not have more surgery. The info I've received about band erosion reassures me that it's unlikely I have erosion....I certainly hope it's so.

Best to you on your renewed program and new surgery.

It has hit me today, as I sit in my chair at work that I don't have my belly sticking out to where it would hit the desk. Oh and I can cross my legs more comfortably. It amazes me just how much I have loss in inches vs actual pounds, I have lost 24 lbs all together. But I believe in inches all over about 3 inches. I am noticing more energy and have pep to my step. My skin is a lot clearer. My watch band is shorter by 3 notches. the little things are what I am noticing. When I bend over I don't feel out of breath or I am going to fall over ( weeble wobble).
I am having a hard time with my sweet tooth, it is very hard to not want to get some ice cream or chocolate. Candy I can do without. I have no craving really for that, just chocolate and ice cream. I have gone as far as taking Popsicle and putting them in my mixer with almond milk and making like ice cream with that/ sometimes I have added un-flavored protein powder.
I feel better everyday. The energy is great to have with having younger kids and being able to have the energy to keep up. 😃

If anyone has any advice on how to make your stomach feel better after you eat something you shouldn't have or at too fast, I would GREATLY appreciate it!! It's painful on both sides of my abdomen (like to the point I'm doubled over and using a hot water bottle in addition to medicine) and I'm really nauseous (the thought or smell of food is 🤢).
