Not enough protein

Recommended Posts

I don't feel like eating most of the time . so I know I'm not getting the Protein I need. What are the dangers with that. I know I needed it for my musles. But I just don't like to eat any more

Your body will begin to digest it's own muscles in order for it to have the Protein you need. However, as your muscles shrink your metabolism will slow down, so no more weight loss. Your hair, skin and nails will suffer. Eventually you will develop medical conditions.

Supplement your diet with Protein shakes. There are many shakes, especially powders, that give 30 grams in one serving. So if you buys those then just 2 shakes a day will provide you with your daily Protein needs.

If you don't get enough Protein you will:

Slow down your healing.

Slow down your weight loss.

Slow down your metabolism.

Lose your hair.

Negatively affect your muscles, skin, and other organs like your heart.

If you are young, it will stunt your growth.

You can eventually die (from heart problems, etc.)

I have timers set on my cell phone that go off when I need to eat, because I am never hungry. You have to eat even if you don't feel like it to get your Protein. Like previous posters said it can lead to serious health conditions if not.

And don't forget the cramping. I can assure you from experience that when your body begins to eat its own muscle, you can feel it. You will get 'charlie horse' sensations in muscles you didn't know you had.

You don't feel like eating?

Eat anyway.

You're not a child.

Act like the adult who made the decision to have weight loss surgery and to regain your health.

Its hard to "want to eat" when you're not hungry but I also set my alarm to remind me. Start the day off with a shake to drink with your

Vitamins.

Set your alarm every 2 hrs, have food ready. I ordered a YumBox. I fill it with healthy Protein food and eat on it throughout the day.

There are tons of ideas for combinations for bento boxes. Check out the world according to egg face blog. She has saved me more than once lol.

End the day with a shake.. My shakes are 30 gram of Protein so each day Im getting more than 60.

We must stay disciplined for this to work, that also means eating when we should making sure we are getting enough nourishment for our bodies to work ;)

That's a little rude I didn't go into full details about my circumstances or situation nor my eating habits I just said something because I thought this was a forum to ask questions. I know I'm an adult I know what I got into and I know this is a lifelong commitment I didn't go into this lightly however it was just a problem that I was having that I'm working on don't know if I'm the only one that has this situations. but when you get rud of remarks like that it makes it hard for people that have genuine questions to ask anything for fear of getting ridiculed .

@@mel6020 - Sorry you felt ridiculed. We are all here to support one another. You can ask any question here--and usually they will be well received. And sometimes you may get a little tough love. Everyone wants you to succeed.

I think even those of us with the most ferocious of appetites, myself included, have had situations in our lives that have made us lose our appetite (ex. stress, fear, etc). Not sure what your circumstances are but I hope you regain your appetite soon.

I think you need to come up with a gameplan to make sure you didn't have this surgery for nothing. You did it to regain your health -- and so you must! You could end up being more unhealthy post surgery if you don't take your Protein requirements seriously. Easier said than done--especially from someone who hasn't even gotten insurance approval yet, let alone had the surgery :-p Set alarms, check out the packages on the various foods you like to see how much Protein they contain, figure out the portions. Drink your shakes, protein waters and even get Snacks that are high in protein-greek yogurt, nut butters, cheese and crackers--yes, I have seen cracker-like Snacks in my local supermarket that have 15g of protein and only 140 calories.

YOU TOTALLY GOT THIS! I know that you are going to be great!

Think of eating and your dietary requirements and your Vitamin supplements as a prescription. If you had a bad infection you would take the prescribed antibiotics. If you had diabetes you would take your insulin. If you had high blood pressure you would take your medications.

No one "wants" to take Meds, but proper nutrition is the "medication" you need for this surgery to work. There have already been good suggestions on how to make that happen. If I Waited to eat until I actually had an appetite I wouldn't have put a single thing in my mouth for about 6-8 months. Instead, I followed my prescription and forced myself to meet Protein and Fluid goals every single day. If you want to lose weight and remain healthy, you need to make nutrition a priority whether you are hungry or not.

It took me a really long time to feel like eating. In the beginning I just ate because I wanted to recover and feel better. Also it is kind of important to eat and follow the steps in the beginning so you can progress. Later when you want to eat, you will have a harder time with eating if you don't eat now.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
