I'm 3 weeks post op "bypass" and been walking mostly but I've only lost 27 pounds since I started this journey.. It feels like I'm not doing something right, Not sure what to do. When did you get the OK to really work out?

When's the last time you lost 27 lbs in three weeks? You're doing fine! It's not a speed race-it's a different life long marathon.

Your body is still healing and the weight loss fluctuations will happen. Make the mind changes about what how and when you eat. Continue to increase your walking daily as long as you feel good---walk! Most can start true gym exercises by 6 weeks-but that's up to your doc.

Questions:

1.) Are you following your diet to the letter?

2.) Are you getting in all your Protein?

3.) Are you getting in all your Water?

As long as you're accomplishing all three of these you are doing EXACTLY as you need to be. I was able to resume regular workouts 2 wks post op. I do a combination of cardio and strength training.

In your mind what do you think you should be doing in regards to exercise?

A good friend of mine loves to say "Slow down turbo." Lol You're doing great. Do as you're doing and if you need to increase your walk time then do so.

Did you surgeon give you date to start working out? If not I'd call and check to make sure they are ok with you resuming a workout routine (or it may have just been forgotten to mention)

27 lbs in three weeks? That's definitely on the high end of the range. From what I've been able to tell by reading these boards for the last 1000 years or so, anywhere from 15-30 lbs is pretty typical of the first month. So you're doing better than most.

I was allowed to do cardio at about four weeks post-op. I think it was 6-8 weeks for weights.

Your doing awesome!! I'm 11 days post op and my doctor and I discussed possibly just adding light hand and ankle weights. I'm located in upstate NY so walking outside is not practical at the moment, darn snow. Also, talked about doing squats, bicep & tricep exercises. Anything I can do right at home!

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
