What kind of exercise are you guys doing?

Recommended Posts

I am four days post op and I have been going for a 30 min walk every three hours but my mom keeps pushing me to do more. Is there more I should be doing this early after surgery?

I'm not an expert but a 30 min walk every 3 hours seems excessive for only 4 days post op. I hope you are wearing a binder so you don't accidentally strain yourself. You definitely need to walk to get the gas out and help speed up recovery, but I don't think doing more than you are doing would be prudent at this early in the healing process. I would call your Dr. and find out exactly what they recommend for exercise at this point.

Listen to you body. I was fine walking that much post-op. I even did some light weight lifting with 5lb hand weights while seated. If you feel any pulling or pain stop, but if not there is no reason to discontinue. If you are uncertain check with your doctor.

I walked for the first two weeks post op. I the resumed Water aerobics at week 3. Currently I do a little of everything, but still do mostly Water aerobics. However walking, bike riding, dumb bells and kettleball. I make it a point to do something everyday and go to the gym 5 -6 days a week.

No, follow your surgeon's orders. walking is fine for now. you will get clearance to do more later. be sure that she doesnt overstep her boundaries. this is your journey, not hers.

I agree, 4 days post op and walking 30 min every 3 hours is definitely a bit excessive. You're supposed to be making sure you're healing properly. You just had major surgery, and your mom should realize that also. My Dr. cleared me for normal exercise activities at 6 weeks, which is today, so I get to use some weights finally. But before that, my doctor said I should only be walking. I walked only 20-30 minutes a day the first week. By week 2 I felt good enough to walk 30-45 minutes once a day. Your body needs time to adjust to the radical decrease in calories. Too much stress could be adverse to your health, so take it slow. The weight will come off in time!

Call your doctor.

Everyone has different recommendations. I was cleared early because I had a pretty pain free experience. In fact I would have been cleared for Water aerobics at 2 weeks except one of my incisions hadn't scabbed over so I had to wait another week for that to happen.

In my opinion, you should be establishing a maintainable level of fitness. I think we all want the weight to just fall off of us, but exercising a LOT now won't help you in the long run. The goal is to establish a new lifestyle that you can continue on with. I know, from my past weight loss experiences, it's really easy to dive in to fitness, and work hard...super hard, to achieve results.....it's also easy to burn out (at least I did). Try not to overdo it in your haste to burn calories!

Um yeah I don't think you need to increase any more at four days out! You just had MAJOR surgery!

Follow your doc's recommendations but at that point mine were to walk maybe 15 minutes a couple times a day!

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
