Lapband revised to bypass but scared!

Recommended Posts

I had the lapband 5 years ago it slipped at some point had surgery to fix it, about 6 months ago I had surgery to remove it. My surgeon didn't do revisions in one surgery she liked to allow your insides to heal... I've ballooned back to my starting weight. I am looking into doing gastric bypass but so very scared of complications that could arise I know surgery is always a risk but already having 3 surgeries due to the Crapband, I am worried about all the scar tissue or issues that could arise... I have an almost 2 year old that I need to be here for =( please tell me someone else has had multiple surgeries and came out fine and still is fine!

Mine was removed 7 mos ago. I am scared too! I've tried to lose on my own since then, but I just cant' do it. I have no incentive or motivation to exercise. I feel like giving up b/c I've been torn between rny and the sleeve for so long, that now I don't want to do anything and just live with getting the complications of my diabetes. I never thought in a million years that I would ever openly admit or write something like this. But actually by writing it out, I can see how stupid it look and sound. If I am afraid of complications from both diabetes and RNY, then why not just have either sleeve or rny

surgery to prevent the obvious complications that comes with the uncontrolled diabetes that I have. Thanks for opening up my eyes.

You don't sound stupid! I've been scared to get more surgery it's normal we got screwed with the band and are worried about the outcome of another surgery! If I were you I would go RNY... For two reasons... You having diabetes RNY helps it and from what I heared the sleeve doesn't and two because I hear of a lot of people going from sleeve to bypass! I hear the sleeve doesn't lose as much, I'm scared about the issues it could cause but I know if I don't do it I won't live long enough to see my daughter grow up and I am 325 lbs right now I need to get down to a healthier size and for me that means surgery to RNY. I hoped I helped a little ! Best of luck to you, you can do it!

I've had many surgeries...c-section, nephrectomy, gallbladder removal, lapband. When my band slipped I lost all hope and gained all my weight back. I had RNY less than two months ago and I'm already down 50 lbs!!! The doctor took out the lapband at the same time. I only stayed in the hospital 2 days and have had no complications. I was scared to death, but this has been the best weight loss decision i've ever made. In my opinion RNY is the way to go.

I had lap band slipped twice and had it removed in May, gained back to my original weight and went through gastric bypass in December with no complications and so far I am down 35 pounds. You can expect about a pound a week weight-loss after the first month. Only spent one night in the hospital and two weeks at home but I have a sedentary job. Good luck it is soooo much better then the band.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
