Band slippage

Recommended Posts

Hi, my last topic was called 6 years on and I mentioned acid reflux and hospital group charging £500 for barium fill to see what's happening which I can't afford, and they just left me, thankfully my own doctor put me in contact with Nhs Chichester bariatric surgeon who I went to see to tell him about my acid reflux, cough, eating everything then nothing, painful eating etc, he immediately took 4ml out of my 6ml I had in, arranged a barium swallow as he thinks the band has slipped, possible relocation surgery needed or removal, very sad today and really bad trapped wind and shoulder pain, which I know is deferred from diaphragm. If you ever have pain that's different or something changes please get it sorted.

Lots of people won't get how excellent it is to be taken over by the NHS as most are in the US. But I totally get it - I was lucky enough to be taken over but the NhS about the years ago, three years after my band.

THG are taking the Mickey! Spire charged me £250 for an XRay wth dye injected into the port to check for leaks and the charge for a barium swallow was £240. But now, of course, the lovely NHS do everything for free!

Hope this gets sorted for you. Band re-positioning is possible but quite a lot if NHS surgeons now prefer to remove, according to my NHS Consultant.

So sorry you chaps are having a problem with your bands. I had a band slippage in April of last year (3.5 years after getting my band - 124 pounds lost). Reflux and bad pain, vomiting blood - just awful. Well, my band was removed (too much scar tissue) and 6 months later - I had gained 50 pounds..I was just sick - I missed my band and wanted it back. My surgeon agreed he said I did not weigh enough for RNY and my insurance would not pay for a sleeve. On 12/29 he put the band back in. I have lost close to 20 pounds - I have not had any fills and I am doing fantastic. I feel like I am in control and have the power once again. Good luck to you both and I hope you can have your problems taken care of without regaining the weight you lost. Regaining was so hard on me mentally - made me eat even more. Good Luck...

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
