First Pre Op Appointment, Dr blew me off

Recommended Posts

Sorry, not able to change the title from pre op to post op... I had gastric bypass surgery on January 8, 2015

I had my first post op appointment with my surgeon this afternoon. My Dr may be good but he has terrible bedside manner. He was asking questions that he should have already know the answers too and he waived off my concerns as if they were nothing.

Asking questions on bariatric pal is so much easier and I get better answers.

So, here goes...

1. I'm throwing up at least once a day after my meal. is that normal?

2. How am i supposed to track my Protein when I'm throwing it up?

These were my big questions and he basically shrugged them off and said i'd be fine in a few weeks. I don't think this is normal at all, do you??

For some people throwing up is pretty common on a daily basis. Do you know if it is being caused by something specific at this point? Like a particular food or maybe the type of Protein drinks you are consuming?

For me, in the first month I discovered that I was suddenly lactose intolerant. I was having a hard time with heaviness in my tummy and I would begin gagging until I threw up. I also had a very hard time with the Protein powders and had to move to a premade shake. I switched to Premier Protein but even then had to use 50 percent Protein Shake and 50 percent lactaid milk. After about 6 weeks I was able to drink a Protein Shake without milking it down.

Also, I was told that if I threw up, I would wait an hour and try something else. That way I was not completely missing my protein.

Not sure if any of this helps or not.

By the way, I never throw up now. "Knock on wood"

Just remember your body still has swelling inside of you. throwing up is false - usually when your stomach rejects the food you create an acid. What your probably going through is a rejection of the content you consumed. Usually when the surgeon installs the lap band it should be at "zero" adjustment . If not then it is possible your band needs to have all Fluid removed : let the body settle with that adjustment then work towards a CC increase to adjust the band. It takes time to understand what your body can do, everyone is slightly different in their own way. Welcome to send me a message or email me for more information.

I am confused. Was this pre-op or post-op?

Post op is after surgery and pre-op is before

I think she meant post op.

My screw up, I meant post op, sorry about that. The Dr. thought throwing up was normal yet his nurses thought otherwise. Either way it sounds like it is somewhat normal from what I'm hearing here. It still doesn't help when I'm trying to get Protein in my body and my body spits it out. Only once since surgery have I gotten all my protein in and kept it down. It's just a little frustrating knowing that I've eaten my protein, only to throw it up, and not knowing how to account for it. How much of what I ate counts towards protein if I'm throwing it up.

Finding sassy,

Is there anyway you can get an appointment with a physician assistant in your surgeon's office? Or maybe with your nutritionist? It doesn't sound normal to me to be puking everyday. I would think it could hurt your stitches. Plus you need to keep some thing down. I haven't thrown up at all. I did develop an aversion to Protein also. I'm sure this is only my expereance, so I'm not an authority. Just think you should check with someone who is. Let me know how you are doing.

If you find that you are lactose intolerant they do make Protein powders out there that make a juice instead of a shake. Could throwing up come from eating too quickly?

So far so good with milk, no problems. The P.A. is calling me this afternoon and we'll see what happens.

I'm sorry to disagree with the majority here, but my surgeon told me that throwing up was not normal and if I started, get in to see him asap.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
