What are some imporant things to make sure you bring to the hospital on the day of your surgery? Toothbrush? Clothes? Things to do?

Does your doctor recommend getting any certain type of soap for after surgery? Is regular body wash ok or should I use an antibacterial soap? I don't want my ports from the laproscopic surgery to get infected.

Thanks!

Everything I took like fun stuff (a book, laptop, iPad) I didn't use. I wore hospital gowns with their non skid socks. I did wear my robe when walking the halls. I took essentials too like deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrush, hair stuff. The clothes I wore to the hospital I wore the same home. I was so out of it the first night I didn't need anything but sleep. :) Good luck on your journey!

Thank you for your feedback!! I am so worried I am going to forget something and I live an hour and a half away from where I am having my surgery.

They gave me special soap at my pre admit at the hospital.

I brought SO MUCH STUFF and barely used any of it, even my iPad which I am addicted to!

I used my phone (bring a charger and an extension cord), Chapstick and my earplugs. The hospital gave me pretty much everything else and even gave me earplugs I just liked mine better. I wasn't allowed to use any of the OTc things I brought---lozenges, gas x, etc. They provided toiletries, socks, slippers, etc. I tend to be an over preparer!

@@ambernamber, I strongly recommend packing a pillow for the ride home. You'll feel every pebble that your car drives over, and having a pillow to clutch to your belly will make the ride home easier. I was feeling great when I left the hospital, but a 30-minute ride home on freeways and county roads had me gasping. I didn't listen to the advice to pack a pillow, and regretted it.

Thank you soo much!! That's not something I even thought about. I knew the ride home would be rough but I just figured I would have to push through it.

Yes a pillow! I used mine while in the hospital. When getting out of bed I held on to it like it was going to save my life! It really saved me on the way home too. I attached a photo of the one I used. Perfect size!

My most important thing was my phone and phone charger. I also took my hairbrush. I wore the clothes I wore to the hospital, home. I did take toothbrush and tooth paste. No makeup.

I was in two nights.

I read that one of the best things to take to the hospital is a pillow to hold against your belly and gas-x strips that melt on your tongue to get rid of the gas pain after surgery. I need to find those!!!

I took basic toiletries, deodorant, toothbrush and toothpaste, hair brush (I was allowed to wear my hair in a ponytail during surgery) slippers, chapstick and my cell phone and charger. I also took a small pillow to put between my stomach and the seat belt for the ride home. I used the slippers and the pillow. I wore the same clothes there and back. The rest never was never taken out of the bag.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
