My doctor told me there would be hormone changes after surgery. Namely that I wouldn't be hungry. That has been all well and good but the hormones also gave me a new Dr. Jekyl, Mrs. Hyde personality. I am two and a half months out of gastric bypass and have spent a lot of the time either yelling or crying. Anyone else having this problem? Any ideas what to do? I have been extremely fortunate and haven't had any other problems other than this. My weight is coming off slowly but surely. I have no complaints.

Hi franyfamilia, I am 3 months out, and am only able to speak from my own experiences. I am sorry this hormone thing has you in tears. Let me start by saying, it most assuredly will pass...fade if you will. Mine is almost completely gone now. When I first came home from the hospital, all kinds of things set me off. My two beloved dogs were so glad to see me...and for some reason, I started crying my eyes out. I repeatedly snapped at my loving, gentle husband for no reason. I laughed uncontrollably when the evening news reported a local criminal was arrested. I hung up on my sister...I later learned from my surgeon's office that this is more common than I thought. They said it was because of all of the years worth of old stored TOXINS that are now being released in the fat that is breaking down and leaving your body. As time went by and my weight went down, this faded and faded. BUT guess what? I swear now it seems like it has turned itself around, and I am SOOOOO HAPPY and pleasant most all the time. I feel like a new person already. I am cheerful and content. I even sing with the radio in the car! Hopefully in just a few more weeks, you too, will feel MUCH improved. You have so much to look forward to!

Hi Steviefan1,

Thanks so much for the encouragement. It gives me hope that "this too shall pass." My energy level is low and I upped my B12 to two a day. I am SO looking forward to the "happy" me, and I'm sure the rest of my family is also.

I am not that far out from surgery, but from what I understand I have been using food to comfort myself for a lot of my lifetime, and since I don't have that as an option anymore a lot of "stuff" I haven't dealt with made me a little emotionally labile. This is just my experience. :)

I understand Snowblue. Most of us have had our "comfort" foods. It is WAY beyond not being comforted by food. It's like going through menopause all over again....how my husband stayed with me those years I don't know. I didn't take any hormone injections.... we all just toughed it out. My surgeon said it was the change in my hormones doing it, he told me to apologize to my husband for him. He said it would get less and less as my body got more use to some of the drastic changes happening to it. I told my surgeon he might want to mention "the estrogen effect" after gastric bypass in his seminars. It has been my greatest problem. Good luck to all of us. I'm proud that we have started our journey to better health together.

P.S. Snowblue...... I'm a lot older than you. I'm almost 60. My weight is coming off slowly. I am losing more inches than weight.....how does that work? My fat clothes are all falling off me, and my large sizes are getting very loose. YEAH !!!!!

Hormones are a huge factor and we all react differently to the changes. For example, I had a procedure done 10+ years ago that stopped me from having periods. My uterus seems to have forgotten this. When I inquired, I was told that my weight loss has changed my hormone levels because I have less fat for storage. I was told things would level out when the weight stabilizes.

Thanks for all the encouragement. I will try to keep the beast leashed until my happy shines through again.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
