My surgery was December 9, 2013. My surgeon was Dr. Shinn in Charleston, WV. Things during surgery and immediately after went as expected. After about 4 weeks I started feeling constantly nauseous and had excessive salivation. My per existing hiatal hernia flared up and my surgeon did a repair. I have not been able to overcome this problem and consequently I gave been hospitalized three times for dehydration and low potassium. I honestly try and drink and get my Protein but I throw up immediately practically everything I swallow. Even Water makes me nauseous sometimes. I try to sip something every few minutes. I have tried smoothies, packaged Protein Drinks. I have list 86 pounds, but I feel so unwell that I almost regret my surgery.

So sorry to hear about your experience! I hope you're able to get past all these issues soon. Are things getting better at all over time? I sure hope so...

I would suggest you consult another surgeon, honestly. Your condition sounds very unusual to me and rather unsafe as well. Maybe make some calls to a different hospital or university surgery department to get consultation? If I were you I would start finding other experts to help me asap. 86 lbs in such a short time is really extreme. I wish you well.

You are not going to get the help you need on a website.

Sadly, you need to go to your surgeon - camp on his doorstep if you have to - and get some service.

There could be a myriad of reasons as to why this could be happening - from a stricture, to your sleeve becoming volvulus, to excess acid, to infection, leak.

We can all talk endlessly about this and provide you with sympathy (which you certainly deserve), but none of us can directly help you.

You need to go to your surgeon and get it sorted.

Sorry you're feeling so bad and wish you a very speedy recovery :)

I agree, excessive weight loss in a short time, and not normal. Get medical intervention!

I have to agree with Madam Reverie definately get answers. But I also should say 86 pounds in 5 1/2 months is doable not knowing her starting weight and how much she has lost prior to surgery. I wish you the best of luck and pray you get the answers you need!!

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
