Has anyone had the surgery alone?

Recommended Posts

Just curious if anyone has done it alone without friends or family helping at the hospital.

When I had surgery, my wife stayed with me overnight in the hospital. It was nice to have her there although she probably lost some sleep because I had to get up once every 2 hours to do my walk.

I had my surgery alone I flew to Alberta Canada to have it done. The hospital is a 12 hr drive from our home. I was away for 6 days 5 were spent in the hospital. The staff was incredible!!

I'm kind of different in that respect. I prefer to be alone when I'm hospitalized. I really don't want anyone around. My husband was there during the surgery and for a couple of hours afterward, but then I cut him loose. He came by for a couple of hours the second day, but again, I sent him packing. He picked me up on day three to take me home. He wasn't thrilled that I didn't want him there, but he understood. I told everyone else (family and friends that knew I was having surgery) to stay away. I had very little pain, so was able to get in and out of bed by myself to do my walking while I was hospitalized. The staff at the hospital was amazing, though, so that definitely made a difference.

My hospital required someone over 18 be there to discharge you.

My hubby did spend time with me on surgery day but I was so sleepy he just watched TV. Same with day 2. It is certainly something I could have done alone but I would never have been able to figure out a way to go alone.

I'm doing it alone! I'm a single mom of 2 boys! My "saint of a mother" is taking off of work to watch my 2yr old because he's a hand full!!!!! He is whom I fear the most after surgery:-o!!!! My younger sister was going to go with me but she has court! My older sister wants to go with me but I'd rather her stay with her own kids. I'm positive I'm going to be ok. They only require an adult to pick me up when I'm discharged.

I was alone, the staff was great which made it easy. Only needed an adult to pick me up, you'll do fine :)

I feel as if I will be doing this alone. Not that I chose to, but my family is very judgmental so when I got the courage to tell them I was waiting on the insurance approval for WLS they (my mother and younger sister) said they didn't Agree but would be my support system. Less than an hour later I overhear them talking about me in the kitchen about how drastic and unnecessary this is and they will not condone it or help me through this. I am a single mom with a 19 month old and I will be hospitalized for 2-3 days. My daughters dad is in the army on a field exercise for a month and my surgery is in 3 days. I had to go to his parents to keep my daughter for me while I'm in the hospital and to help me with things at my apt post op. For about 4 weeks I tried to talk to my mom about it because I was hurt but her response was always "I don't want to talk about it" well when it came time for my liquid diet, her response was "surgery?!?! Next week?!?! How come you are just now telling me?!" Seriously woman??? So my good guy friend (kinda boyfriend) and a few coworkers are seriously my only support system (oh and my exs parents).

I don't have any close family (and no family on the island). Being in the hospital alone is no biggie because you are well-taken care of. Being home alone was a scary thought, but it was fine. I was even able to take care of my two kitties. Good luck and God Bless!

My mom is the only person who knows about my surgery. She is the only person who will be with me at the hospital.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
