Good Bye Lap Band

Recommended Posts

I was banded May 2005. I have gone from 375 to my current weight of 125. I thought everything was going great until about 6 months ago started having acid reflux. Went to my Dr and we did an upper GI and found out band had slipped. Having it removed 1/21. I am truly heart broken. I feel like all my hard work has been for nothing. I worked so hard to get to this point and I DO NOT ever want to go back. No one seems to understand my sadness. All I hear from them is thats life or it will be fine. NO IT WILL NOT BE FINE!!!!! Just wish they understood. Thanks for letting me vent a little.

((((hugs))) to you, maybe he can just reposition you band, that is what I had done, a revision. I did not need to lose it! Best wishes, Karen..aka..kll724

Your feelings over this are entirely legitimate. I hope your surgeon proposes either repositioning or just an entire unfill to see if the band will go back into its correct place that way. Please keep us informed.

But yes, people on this forum understand your sadness and fears completely. You have worked very hard to go from morbid obesity to a healthy weight (well done!) and it is normal that you are apprehensive about losing your band.

Congratulations on the weight loss. You've done an excellent job and you are an encouragement to newbies like myself.

I wish you the best with your upcoming surgery. Did your doctor propose replacing it or some other option or is s/he flat out removing it?

Sorry to hear about your slip, but why can't your surgeon reposition or replace your band? Is there too much damage?

I know some people are not candidates for rebanding, but many are.

I recently (December 19, 2013) had my band removed. I have acid reflux and other issues that opening the band completely did not fix. I tried and held on and held on. Finally, I had it removed. I really did not want to do this, but my reflux is gone and I am sleeping for the first time in years. However, I totally understand how you feel.

It is like removing a vital part of yourself! I am learning to live without my buddy, and hope I can work it out. When I had my band put on, I lost all feeling of hunger or fullness. I literally have not felt hunger or fullness for years. One of my big fears was that this sensation would return. It has not returned. However, I am finding it is much easier to eat, which is not a good thing.

I am going to have to be very mindful and eat very slow. I am forcing myself to look at this as a new adventure. I have started walking a great deal and focusing on moving.

My big issue is not having a sense of feeling full. I have really portion out my food because I don't have hick-ups when I am full.

I wish you the best and keep up your spirits! We will work on this together!

Kellie

I too am having horrible acid reflux, and coughing not able to sleep. I am going to talk to a surgen to have my band removed. I have had my band about 8 yrs and the past 2 years have gained about 30 lbs back. My doctors nurse asked me today if I wanted the sleeve, does anyone know about that? I have read that one of the side effects is acid reflux.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
