Unfortunately, Dr. Urbandt was nice to begin with. Then, I started having major symptoms and not being able to swallow or eat food. I would throw up 8 times a day. He IGNORED all my symptoms and said nothing was wrong. For 9 months, I dealt with throwing up everyday. Dr. Urbandt also ignored all my test results that said there was no gastric pouch. I ended up getting it removed nine months later. I still continued to throw up and eventually we found out he actually paralyzed my Vegas Nerve which in turn, paralyzed my stomach and now I can barely eat anything without puking. He also left a tube inside of me in which i had to get another surgery to remove it. He is the WORST doctor I have ever encountered and I would NEVER recommend him to anyone again. HE ruined my life and I am only 21 and my whole life is going to consist of feeding tubes and doctor's appts all because he did not listen to my symptoms and admit something may have been wrong. Please watch out for him!!

Just wanted to come back and let everyone know how the actual surgery went..

Dr. Urbandt and Staff were beyond Nice to me and my family during my surgery. My parents said he was very kind and told them how everything went after my surgery. I was in a great amount of pain afterwards and I felt that He really cared about me. My 2 week follow up appt, I came to realize he really does care for all of his patients and wants everyone to reach their goals, But I dont think will be much of a baby sitter, If you follow his "rules" after surgery you will be a success. I have had to call a few times since my surgery and his staff has been nothing but GREAT always answering my questions.

Dr. Urbandt and Julie were both very nice to me also during the first couple months I do not disagree with that. It's just when I started to have problems they didn't seem to care. I did follow his "rules" as you say. I did the hot liquids before eating, slowing down when eating and taking smaller bites and eating the right food. They put me through a ton of testing in which they ignored the test results and told me that "some people just can't handle the band". Now I am 21 years old with a severe stomach paralyzation because he paralyzed the main nerve that controls your stomach. I still throw up about 8 times a day only this time it's whole undigested food hours after I have eaten. This is a severe disease all because he ignored test results. i did all his "rules" and it still was horrible. I got the lap band to change my life because I didn't want to end up with diabetes like my grandfather and baby cousin. I am happy that it has worked for you because I don't wish this disease on anyone. Good luck with your post op! I hope you make your goal since I was unable to make mine.

I know all doctors make mistakes, but this is a little over the top. I dont see Dr. Urbandt ignoring test results and putting his reputation on the line. That facility is ranked #1 in the state for bariatric surgery. I am not calling you a liar, so please dont think that. I know there are risks associated with the band as with everything else. If the tests showed no pouch why did he not act? I know I would have seen another Dr. before 9 months of throwing up. I wish all of you the best and does anyone have any positive updates?

I have to agree, I was sitting in bed thinking about this last night.. If i really thought i didnt have a pouch i would have gone to see another doctor, There are TONS of surgerons that perform lapband around pittsburgh, I am sure one of they would have seen you. Like she said i am not calling you out, I am just saying what i would have done... But their way i am sorry that this happened to you...

Your experience does not reconcile with mine. He is actually the doctor that I switched to from my former surgeon, who overfilled me and then blamed me for all the resulting problems. An upper GI showed how bad things were and he took out some fill. That is when I went to Dr. Urbandt for a second opinion and he's the one who told me the actual size of my band (4cc's) whereas my former surgeon told me it was 10 cc's. He was also very complimentary on my weight loss, which my former doctor wasn't.

You don't say how many cc's your band held or how many cc's you had in fills. Did you request copies of all test results? If not, you should have, including the operative report. Then you needed to address all those results with him. I find it hard to believe that he ignored test results. Did you seek a second opinion? Did you call a patient advocate at the hospital or talk to the chief of surgery or hospital administrator?

Who removed your band? Was it Dr. Urbandt or did you go to another hospital? Was the tube that was left in removed when the band was removed? And if not, why not?

I have a friend who had to have much of her stomach removed due to a lot of gastric problems and they cut the vegas nerve on purpose and she is fine (very thin) but fine.

I actually went to the ER in December due to being extremely stuck. I had called him twice from home and that's what he told me to do. The ER doctor removed all my fill and that's the way I have kept it. I was admitted overnight and the next day they did a follow up upper GI - everything was fine. And then they did another one the next month. Again - fine. He seemed concerned about this problem of mine. But I get all test results and follow through with calls, if necessary.

Now, I know you're young, but if you're going to undergo such a surgery, you have to be prepared to be a proactive patient and get all the test results, ask questions, and know who to go to if you don't like the answers.

Something about your story just doesn't add up to me. I believe that you had problems resulting in the removal of your band. But I think parts of your story are missing because it just doesn't seem normal for a doctor to ignore test results.

I do wish you well and hope you can resolve all your problems. Good luck.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
