December Bandsters 2009

I can't believe I am so close to surgery!!

I have lost around 22 pounds on my liquid diet, but the scale hasn't moved for a few days. I would think only putting 800 calories in my mouth would make the weight just fall off. I haven't been exercising a whole lot because of the crappy weather we have had. I did eat a cookie last night because i was overly stressed out and my kids were driving me batty.

I'm so ready for the scale to start moving down again.

Good luck to everyone getting banded this week!

I am also in Southern California - who was your doctor? I am in "find a doctor phase". I am also self pay.

I am in SoCal too. My doc is Doctor Oliak. Who is yours? I'm being banded on the 16th.

I haven't picked a doctor yet, i'm researching several. I am hoping that since I will be self pay I can be scheduled soon and be on my journey will the rest of you.

Other self-pays - how long did it take from your consultation to when you had your surgery?

I was banded on the 11th....how is your pain?

Hey Linda, I was banded on the 9th and my pain has been VERY manageable! I have had to take pain meds 3 times. Once was while I was in the hospital and twice were the first two nights I was home and I took it right before bed because I wasn't sure how I would feel lying flat. I've had VERY little gas pain. It seems to manifest itself in my left shoulder, but, after walking a bit and taking some Gas-X, it's managed to work itself out.

I had my 1st appt with my surgeon on 9/18 and my surgery is scheduled for 12/22. I could have had it as early as 12/8, but I wanted to wait until my kids were out for Christmas break. I live 4 hours away from the hospital that my surgery will be at, so it that week worked out better as far as the kids.

My surgeon had me do a practice diet and get all my testing done, and had me come back a month later. Since I did everything like he asked and did well with the practice diet, he scheduled my "pre-op" appointment a month later, where I had to bring my support person and get more details on what actually happens with the surgery and what to do. Then I just have to do a 2 week liquid high protien low carb diet...on day 6 now!

Good Luck!

Best wishes to those being banded tomorrow!!! I have 3 more sleeps until it's my turn. Can't wait. The anticipation is killing me!

I went to a GNC store and got some Protein Powder with low carbs but haven't tried it. I also bought Isopure Zero Carb that has 40 grams of Protein. They were $4.00 a piece! So, I haven't opened one yet. But I was reading earlier that they taste nasty! The person who wrote that also said that they did get their protein in though and had energy because of it. So, I'm going to grin and bear it! I might pick up some of that Carnation Instant Breakfast stuff for hot choc. though. I still have to buy Jello and Greek Yogart. But besides that I'm ready. Oh! I have to pack. But let's get this puppy rolling.....I've been ready!!!

I think I'd sleep better but getting up to go to the bathroom every 2-3 hours. Ive been drinking alot more Water than I ever have..and that a tea..has made me not crave diet pepsi like I thought I would. Still feel swollen, and bruised...

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
