Without fruit, especially watermelon, frozen oranges, and frozen peaches.

I am a Florida girl, and I am used to having watermelon, oranges, peaches, plums and such in the freezer ready to eat at anytime, better than an icepop. And now I see that I will not be allowed fruit until 6-12 months after surgery, after approximatly 75% of my excess has been lost.

Has anyone else had this type of restriction from their doctors post lap band surgery?

That seems like such a long time for such good items. Take my ice cream, my Pasta, and even my rice, but my fruit, now those are fighting words.

I've never heard that one! i eat fruit and I'm just 90 days post-op. I can't eat the membrane around citrus sections but other than that, I have no problem. I don't eat a lot of it, but I was told not to go more than 4 hours between meals and I have no choice but to go about 6-1/2 to 7 hours between lunch and dinner, so about 4:30 I have a small snack. Sometimes it's an ounce of cheese and sometimes it's fruit.

Nope, i went to the nutrition seminar on Thursday, and the way it is in the book 2 weeks prior to surgery, liquid diet

24 hours prior to surgery, stop Protein Shakes, Clear Liquids only.

post op day 1 in hospital, 1 oz Water every hour, no ice chips, if well tolerated can begin phase 1

phase 1--- sugar free & clear liquids for 2 or 3 days

phase 2--- sugar free& liquid & high Protein shakes for approx 2 weeks

phase 3--- soft/ pureed, high Protein foods, for approx 6-8 weeks

phase 4--- high protein foods and added vegi's, this may begin 2 months after surgery and continue until reached 75% of excess weight loss

phase 5---high protein foods, and added complex carbs in the form of whole grains, starchy vegis and fruit, may begin once you have lost 75% of excess weight and continues for lifetime, may take 6-12 months after surgery to reach this point.

i am fine with it all, it is only the fruit that is going to be hard.

I'm 9 months out and have never been told that, in fact OI am encourage to have a balanaced diet (meat, fruits and veggies). I have trouble with bananas and the skin on some fruit but otherwise, no issues.

I can see why you got that diet, and it makes sense. You do want to lose. I know it will be a long summer but it's just one in a BUNCH of great summers that will follow!

Although my doc didn't put it the way you have, my post op diet (once healed) is very similar: we're to eat Protein, then veggies, then if we still have room (and we shouldn't have room!) fruits and grains and pastas.

So I was told the same thing, just in a different way.

I bet you lose well following that plan.

I think that the natural sugar is the issue. I am allowed to have some fruits but was warned about the high contet of natural sugars. You may want to ask if you can add some to Protein Drinks sometimes for flavor and a change.

I am allowed fruit by my surgeon. But I can't have it. Fruit seems to have so much sugar in it, it makes me nauseous. Even if you get past the 6 month mark and don't break the rules, you may not be able to tolerate it. Fruit is delicious. Though being sick from it, I find isn't worth it.

I've never heard of freezing an orange. How do you do that? Just put the orange in the freezer? Sounds like a yummy treat.

peel it, break it into slices, then put in a zip lock bag and freeze. if you do it with seedless its even better.

i use them as ice cubes in my drinks, gives that little added flavor, instead of lemon all the time.

Thank you. That sounds like a wonderful idea. Even if you can't eat the orange, at least you get to enjoy the flavor. I can't believe I never heard of that before!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
