Pre-op diets?

Recommended Posts

My first day on the preop!

I started my day with a cup of black coffee and splenda.

an hour later i drink 1 Optifast shake.

followed it with a water bottle. it has been about 4 hours and i am so full. i dont know how I will be able to drink another shake. i guess i have to force myself sometime soon.

my doc recommends to drink 5 a day along with Water and crystal light. So being the first day not too bad.

My approach is dont even think about it and do it!

good luck to everyone!

:(

Hello,

I just saw your post as I was finishing my first Optifast shake. I was a bit nervous about starting this diet today but after reading your post I am a bit more optimistic. I see we are the same starting weight too (by your ticker) when is your surgery date??

HELP! HELP! HELP! :wink::sad::rolleyes:

I'm on day three of my pre-op diet and I feel like I'll never make it for another 4 1/2 days! My diet is 6 cans of SlimFast a day, nothing else but Water, and I'm about to vomit at the thought of drinking another SlimFast!!! I've reread this thread with all the encouraging words (including mine) to gather some strength, but I'm seriously feeling ill. I've been "cheating" by not drinking all 6 drinks, but then I'm starving and exhausted and headachey all day.

Last night I had a cup of unjury chicken Soup, which helped because the texture is so different and I got something salty to taste. But do you think that's okay to do? Unjury actually has half the calories, zero fat, and twice the Protein than the Slim Fast can, so I figured it couldn't really hurt that it wasn't "Slim Fast" brand. (However, it did have twice the sodium as SF.)

I used to think the SF drinks were okay, until I had to drink six a day!! :)

Any suggestions or thoughts are greatly appreciated!!! TIA!

Ann,

As long as your getting some protien and staying under 1000 calories then you should be fine.. It should be good for you to mix it up a bit. I'm surprised that your Dr. is making you only take just one thing all day long.. I feel for you.

My Pre-Surgery Diet is following a High Protien low carb diet consuming no more then 1000 calories per day.

Diet example is Protein shake for Breakfast and lunch and then a high protien dinner with small portion of meat and veggies. keeping all day calories under 1000.

So, still do what your Dr. tells you but mixx it up a bit and mix your slim fast in with some ice and a bannana in the blender or add a little bit of Peanut Butter to your chocolate slim fast. Just think outside the box but still being with in your dr's rules. And then go for some walks or go take a swim.

I have been walking, and doing some Water aerobics each day and I have lost 12 pounds so far. My surgery day is May 6th. You can do it..I beleive in you hang in there.

Ann, hang in there. I know exactly what you are feeling. I am only 1 1/2 days into my week long pre-op. For me, it's the smell of the drinks. But I am taking small steps and I was soooo proud of myself for getting through yesterday.

One day at a time. You can and will do this. Remember that we are all in the same boat and we will all make it.

My doctor told me that this was going to be the hardest part of the LapBand journey, because of the relationship I have with food. I am now realizing what he meant. Emotionally I have to really prepare that my relationship with food is changing.

You can do it. We are all here for you.

Walks and any form of exercising might help you get through this. My mom suggested to me to clean out my lingerie draw and think about the new pieces that will be replacing the old ones. That mental picture helps me get another shake down.

Good luck:rolleyes2:

Ann, you can do this! Like Meem said, just one day at a time... You can do anything for just ONE day. I had to tell myself that a lot today too, for some reason it was harder than it has been.

We are so close now, though! WE can do this!

Oh, thank you, everyone for your kind words of encouragement! I did find that blending the SlimFast with ice, some milk, and a scoop of powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury chocolate powder makes it taste better.

Melissa, thank you for telling me that your doctor said this is the hardest part of the diet. That gives me hope in a weird kinda way.

I'm going to the mall with my friend today, to get some walking in. That will help keep my mind off of things.

Thanks again for the suggestions and support. You all are the greatest!!! ;)

Ann, only take it one minute at a time. You can get through right now. Don't worry about tomorrow or how long you have to do this. Just do it RIGHT now. (As I type this with a shakiy, non food eating hand)

I want that Bandito siggy too... and I should try to post a picture in my avatar... you guys are so techy!! Let me see if I can do it...

Thanks, Shelley! I'm thankful I've made it this far... only 2 1/2 days to go on this awful diet. Making the shakes in the blender helps, but now the smell of the shakes is making me gag. And it's doing awful things to my digestive tract. Ugh.

But, together we can get through this!! Thanks for everyone's support -- it is really helping me tremendously!!!

TxAmy,

Your pre-op diet looks a lot like mine. Do you mind telling me where you're getting your surgery done, and who your doctor is? You can send a private message if you want. :-)

I've started mixing my protein/milk with instant coffee and a little unsweetened cocoa powder, and freezing it. It's the best thing I've tried so far!

How about you?

Hi everyone!! Well I made it through the weekend with only ONE meltdown! It lasted just a few minutes and it was triggered by a crabby husband and a 12 year old with a desire to go to the mall. Yes, THE Mall - the one with twisted carb sticks that I shall not name here. Not to mention the food court.

I made a deal with her - no mall but we went to a strip mall type of shopping center. Much better!!

So I had my pre-op testing done today - went very well in and out in just over 2.5 hours. I had a Chest X-Ray, Upper GI, EKG, Lab Work, Urine test and met with a Dietician and a respitory therapist to learn about the Flow Meter usage.

On day 6 of the liquid diet and it's going really well, I thought I'd have been sick or lightheaded or weak and tired, but I actually have more energy - maybe it's the excitement.

I've lost 8 lbs. so far so that is a big bonus too!

Everyone is doing a great job!! Let's keep up the good work!

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
