First trip to the Chinese Buffet

Recommended Posts

I have been avoiding Chinese Buffets since surgery, so its been about 4 months. I ended up going there today. Overall, I did really well, but for me at a place like this I have to remember DON'T EAT TOO FAST. Normally I have my wife with me, who had the gastric bypass so we help each other. Today I was by myself so after a quick reminder from my stomach, I did pretty well.

I was tempted to ask for the kids price since I have had surgery and have the card, but at this place, they found a way around that. :tt2: The kids price is 50 cents per year old. So the kids price for me would be $25 :) Well, I ate smart and still felt like I got a good meal for the $5.95 price.

There is one all you can eat place here in Columbus called Mongolian BBQ. This place can be pricy, but besides the great food they are absolutely terrific about accepting the card and giving us the youth price. (We always tip based on the adult prices)

Sounds like you handled the buffet well. I have only been to one buffet since being banded. I did OK, but I had to really concentrate on my eating :tt2:. I went for a family dinner with my parents, and they just paid the adult price for me. I did not get a chance to try to use my card. The next time I go to a buffet I am definitely going to try though :)!

a buffet for 5.95 is a steal hehe.

Glad you fared well there. With my restriction I couldn't eat more than a few bites so I avoid buffets but I think the last one I went to was 24.95.

What is the "CARD" you people are talking about. I never received anything about my band, except copies of printed material, etc....

I was banded on a military base, and don't even know what type of band or what size I have???? I am doing very well with it, lost 30 pounds in 8 weeks! Banded on Jan 16, 09 and went shopping the next day, felt great!

Its a card that says you're a bariatric patient and to please accomadate you with smaller meals and lower prices.

Here's where I end up making everyone mad.... I don't believe in them. I figure we made ourselves fat we shouldnt expect them to go out of their way for us to save money.

I can understand your senitment and agree to some extent. I won't use the card everywhere, but there are places I find it approrpriate. My Chinese Buffet was an example of it not being needed.

Also keep in mind many restaurants price buffet type meals based on what the average, or the upper percentage will eat.

Many quality establishments like the Mongolian BBQ I mentioned recognize that at their prices you are going to eat there a lot less because for you its jut not a good value. They recognize this and welcome our business by making it a better value.

One other point about these cards is port sizes at regular restaurants. Some places just have ridiculous portion sizes and many times taking home is not an option. Some places offer smaller portions of good food and limit that availability to seniors or children. I should have the right to buy the smaller portions. Smart restaraunts recognize its good to make a little profit rather than no profit. Plus it helps thier tip depended wait staff. As I may have mentioned, I tip based on what I use to order instead of what I do order. I figure why punish a wait person for my eating less. (I am still saving money)

I stand by the statement I made and on all the other threads ever created.

We made ourselves fat I would never ask someone else to go out of their way to accomodate me with or without a card ... No matter what the reasoning is..

Hey! Who you calling fat? I'm not fat....I'm just "husky". At least that's what my mama tells me.

i also dont believe in the card. i have friends that are naturally thin and always eat small portions, they dont get to ask for kids prices just cuz they have smaller appetites

I would only question the "Go out of their way"

I also received the card in my packet from the surgeon's office. However, on a recent trip to the buffet at Golden Corral I forgot my card and explained to the girl at the register that I had weight loss surgery and couldn't eat much and asked if they would allow a discounted price without my card and she gladly did. So it doesn't hurt to mention it even though you don't have a card. Also, I don't always use mine either, but hey, I won't pass up a discount if provided.

I would only question the "Go out of their way"

To deviate or to change the standard protocol.

Hence .. I had an elective surgery that reduces my food intake... Please change your companies protocol to match my needs and dish a smaller plate and a smaller price.

I agree with the previous poster as well... My sister weighs about 120 and has always ate like a bird. She has never asked them to reduce her price.

Her son wants something off the adult menu but he is under 12 he doesn't ask for less and say it's because it's what he wants but cannot eat their standard portion size.

If I want lobster at market value I pay the $40.. I don't ask them to chop the tip off the tail and charge me $10.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
