I've read up on the prodeedure and went to a lap-band siminar last night, but the doctor wasn't that big of a help & seemed to flip through the slide shows like the place was on fire. And he's supposed to be one of the better doctors in Kansas City, MO. (Where I live)

I really just need people to talk to and give me info on how the surgery went, any complications, how long before getting back to normal activity, etc.

If you can fill me in a bit, I'd be most grateful. I hope to meet some new, friendly people on here that are going through the same thing as me.

I must ask if he is with a Center of Execellence? These guys seem to be more like what we expect. My seminar was about 2 hours ( I went to three different), my consult with the surgeron was about an hour. He talked with me about my medical history and discussed the process throughly. I had nutrition class for an hour where we taked about me, what I had tried, what I was doing currently and what did I expect to change after surgery. I later had a 4 hour group class,got had outs and a lot of q&a. So I have gotten a ton of info and 2 or 3 back up phone numbers to get answeres. I will have WLS next Monday. I am not as worried about my choice as some others have mentioned, so don't settle. Check him out well. Both of the first two I went to see didn't come off right to me. Good luck.

doctors don't always have the best bedside manner but it doesn't mean they are not good at what they do. I am in nursing school and plan to have the surgery done come May some time. I see my doc next week. Yet, yesterday was my OR day so I got to watch surgery on a person. Now, she didn't get the Lap band, but she did get Lapscopic surgery and I was amazed how invasive it was and how quick it was. I have had surgery before so getting the band that part doesn't not scare me, it is living with it afterwards and losing the weight for good. I have a nurse at work who got it done, she missed less then 2 weeks, she was on light duty for those times but she is getting along great with the band and the weight lose has been slower then she thought it would be, but everyone body is different. I hope this helps.

Wait until your one on one appointment with the Dr then make a decision. If you don't like him after that than try to find someone else to see in your area.

As far as my story. Yes, I had complications, which resulted in 2.5 days in the hospital. I am doing great now, other than my hormones are wacked out.

I took two weeks vacation off and enjoyed every minute of it at home recovering. I have lost 40 pounds so far and have no regrets.

Yes, his manner giving the seminar doesn't mean he's not a good doctor, but at least in my city, there are lots of great docs to chose from...let's face it as long as they've done plenty of these procedures successfully and your healthy it's not likely you'll die. This isn't like other surgeries that I've had where you do the surgery and never see them again. You will be seeing this doctor for years. Aftercare was at least, if not more important to me as the surgery itself and having a doctor you trust, like, and can talk to is a big part of that.

I attended 3 different seminars (two were centers of excellence), not only did I learn some different things from each, but it helped me to pick my doc. The doc at the first seminar I went to was an egotistical a$$...we almost walked out. It was actually the place I initially thought I would pick. Even if they won 'best bariatric dr. in the city' did I want to see that a$$ when I'm having complications or problems with fills. This process is so emotionally linked anyway, why would I want to chose a doc that I wouldn't feel was supportive.

Seminars cost you nothing (at least here), so try some other places. If you need a 6 mo. diet you can get started on that right now with your PCP and going to other seminars won't put you back in time at all. Shop around!
