Hello, From Brisbane AUSTRALIA, banded 29 Jan 09

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, I am a 29 year old mother of 2 children that has just been banded, 1 week ago today. So far I have had mixed feeling about it, but that has just been because of the discomfort. Now that is clearing up and I am seeing the weight come off (I know, already).. it is becoming all worth while.

I started at 146.6 kgs (323lb), that was my weigh in before I started the Optifast diet, 2 weeks prior to surgery, so yesterday I went to weigh myself and discovered that I am already down to 132.9kg (292lb). I was shocked that I have dropped o much already. :)

I was banded by Dr. Blair Bowden and the Wesley Private Hospital, in Brisbane. He was highly recomended and more expensive that other specialists in the area ( i was not covered by private health insurance), but I am very happy with my choice.

I look forward to getting to make some new friends here, and learn more about the journey that I have ahead of me.

oxox

Hi Nene, Im hoping this forum will become a great tool to help me talk about this process of banding. My starting weight is 102.7 kg and Iam 157cm. I know im overweight but i was shocked to find out that my BMI puts me in the morbidly obese catergory!! That blew my mind. Congrats on the wonderful weight loss you have already achieved. Im a nurse and i know to much sometimes!! The pain after the surgery scares the hell out of me. How lond did you take to recover? My husband is going to take a week off so he can help with the kids etc. Hope to talk to you soon.

Sam

Hi there, thanks for your messages, I will give you a quick run down about my weight situation.. I was banded 29th Jan, and weighed 146.6kg on the day I started Optifast.. by the way is a horrible tasting drink.. however in that fortnight, I lost around 8kg. Up to today, 3.5 weeks post band, I have a total loss of 16.6kg. I now weigh 130kg. I am 5'8 in height, and have been told that I hold my weight well, but I never have felt like I do.. I have gone from wearing a tight sz 26, to now wearing and fitting into a sz 22. It feels fantastic.

Now for the nitty gritting operation after pain stuff...

I am not going to lie and say it doesnt hurt, and feel uncomfortable from the moment you wake in recovery till about the end of the first week.. But from there on, it gets so much better.. I now, dont even feel like I have a band in, apart from the much much smaller meals that I eat. Tomorrow is my last day of soft foods, but I'll admit, I have been munching of crackers in this time, just gotta make sure that I mush them right up in my mouth..

I know that I will never regret this decission. It already is showing signs of a huge improvement in my life, not only physically, but emotionally.

MISSFLINTSTON 76.... Who is doing your band?? Where will you have it done?? Some surgeons operate out of different hospitals. Are you living in Brisbane or travelling here to get it?? Ohh, I noticed you joined my blog as a follower.. I was having a few problems with that page, so I have transfered it to... www.nenesband.blogspot.com drop me a comment some time there if you like.. I wish you the best of luck..

HALLY.... I hope my little speech above explains some about me. Thank you for the congrats on my weight loss.. I do have a long way to go, and the end seems so far, but this is the one thing in my life that I will never regret.

It is good that your hubby is taking the week off.. I didnt have that luxury, but it sure would have been good.. But I still had alot of support from him when we got home each day.. My kids are 3 and 8. How old are yours?

As far as the pain issue.. I actually read a blog just before going in for banding that read " I woke in theatre, feeling like I had been stabbed in the stomach and sucker punched up under my ribs".... well I can honestly say.. thats kind of how I felt. BUT I do stress that everyone is different. I made a friend on the day of being banded with another lady who was getting hers done.. You might like to read her blog, about how she felt, as she did quite well to go into detail of how she coped with recovery.. her blog is www.misspiggychronicles.blogspot.com and mine is www.nenesband.blogspot.com take a look, and I hope this helps..

If either of you want to contact me, you can also email me if it is easier.. nenesalifu@hotmail.com It does help to have someone who has been through it. Best of luck..

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
