Slimband formerly TLBC Clinic Toronto On

Thanks Donna D. Very nice of you to remember. Hope the weather holds for you in November and we can have a short get together.

Have to admit, the fill nurse is a bit slow on her paperwork which can cause problems. Doctors already have too much paper work and if the cliniic is slow, good probability they will discontinue their association with the clinic. Hope not as fill doctors are hard to find. Maybe someone should take over the paper trail as I have never had a problem with the other professionals. Just a suggestion.

Morning everyone

Just wanted to let you know that there is a new fill/de-fill Doctor in Oshawa near Taunton and Thornton.

His name is Dr. Lapena and he was fantastic. I had .5cc removed and for someone that has only been doing this for 6 weeks I was impressed.

Just make sure that they receive the paperwork via the clinic. I was told Nancy would take care of it but when I got there they hadn't rec'd anything. After numerous calls...reaching only voice mail.....a live person had to email Nancy and get the paperwork faxed over.

I must say they have NOT improved getting thru to them in any way whatsoever!!!

My very best to all and especially Doddie on her 38th wedding anniversary today. My love to you and Jim. xoxox

Hi: If you have questions, perhaps you should go to the new site which is slimband.com. If you want to check out other clinics, then I would suggest going to canadianlapbanders : Canadianlapbanders

You can join it is free. Also, check this website by going to home and scrolling down the various post headings.

If I can be of assistance, fee free to ask away and I will do my best to answer.

Hi

Thanks for responding.

I've looked at the slimband site but can't seem to find the forum section. i can only see the blog sections.

I thought i read last year that the band might soon be covered by our health card but can't find anymore info on it. so i'm guessing that it's still not covered - is that right?

what about these ads at the side that say $4200 for the band $5200 for the sleeve.

Is the clinic down town the only place who do it or is it just the best place? i'm wondering why the difference between the $4200 and $16000

how much could i expect to loose once I get the band in?

Hi there; I was banded by TLBC (now Slimband) allmost 3 yrs ago.

Prices of $4200 and $5200 are the clinics in Mexico, that offer the surgerys. I personally know many ladies that have gone to Mexico for their surgery and all went well.

Problem is AFTERCARE, who is going to do your Fills for you in Canada??? CIBO, SWLC, Slimband will NOT do fills for NON patients... so make sure you check out all options.

With the SLEEVE, you'll need no fills after surgery, but you may want to stay in contact with your surgeon for questions and concerns..

Do you live in Toronto? or close by? There is now Lapband offered in Barrie, Ontario from Lakeview Surgery, I visited there and its nice, surgeon very approchable.. Liked them.

you can pm me with questions too if they are of a more private nature.

hi: you have to join slimband's website just as you do most. They have a private members only as well. Go to their home page and follow from there.

Dr. Yau works from the TLBC and Slimband is his support organization. He has only the one clinic but supports long distance patients like myself through webcam meetings with various specialists. He has fill nurses (doctors) throughout Canada but you must be a patient of his. Most clinics go that route. You can find fill doctors through the internet that will do fills for a fee but they are hard to find. The other very reputable clinic is SWLC. Dr. Colbourn (sp?) is very well respected.

Many do go to Mexico which is cheaper, but as advised you should be prepared for hardship in getting fills. I understand the clinic gives good support so they may have started fills doctors in Canada. You shoud check with them.

The sleeve is fairly new and I understand it must be removed after a certain period of time. I admit I am not knowledgable about it. Research is the only way.

You will find gastric bands run around $16000 with the reputable well known clinics as they provide free aftercare for a period of time. For instance Slimband is my clinic and they offer 4 years with fills. However, I continue to receive moral support and am enjoying how the clinic has improved services of the years.

If possible, go personally to the clinics.

Hi Heather - I'm not a Slimband patient - had my surgery in Sarnia two years ago. But I'm interested in people's experiences and challenges. I had the surgery in March 2008 and had problems right from the beginning. The band never did work properly and it took two years before they finally removed it - as I was so dehydrated I was put on IV. I don't know whether to consider it again. the clinic wants another $3500 after I already paid $15000.

I also want to know how the band feels when it's working - what's the full feeling like, same as without?

- what else about the band make sit work? what else do you feel? what else happens?

Thanks to anyone with comments.

Gloria

Hi Hope - my band didn't work and was removed. I want to know what it feels like when it's working? what it does? what's different?

Anything you can tell me would be helpful. I'm trying to decide whether to redo. The clinic wants another $3500 now after I've already paid $15000 and had three surgeries.

Thanks, Gloria

Hi GLoria;

so sorry to hear that you`ve had so much trouble...to your questions

when the band is working you can only eat about 1 - 1& 1/2 cups food in total... thats the volume thing...

I eat a pro bar for breaky most days... but some mornings I can only get in 1/2 at a time... then full...

betwwen meals i drink teaéskim milk, coffeeéskim milk, crystal lite.

then lunch 1 slice rye toast, with a slab of ham on it folded over.2.5 or 3 oz of meat... i am then full.

now for dinner I might have 3 oz steak, 1/2 cup corn, 1/2 cup sauteed onion in EVOO...

Popcorn for a snack in the even.

this will all total approx 1000 cals or sometimes less If I have chicken/fish.

Don`t know why your band didn`t work... was it too tight??? How big a band was inserted, and how many fills (how much ) did you have?..

Perhaps gastric sleeve would be a better option for you...

What is your BMI and what is your WL goal?

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
