Hair loss question: what are we talking here?

I've heard hair loss is common after WLS.

Well, I'm about a month out, have lost 15 of the 50lbs I want to lose... and have started to notice hair on the counter, in the sink, on my clothing. My hair is not visibly thinner, but I'm starting out with lot of it.

I'd like to know what to expect... do people see their hair get noticeably thinner? Is the hair loss often severe? Or is it just a bit more than usual rates of shedding? Is it less with less weight loss?

Thanks.

JMS,

thank you I will check out Ebay asap! I have started taking Biotin now so hopefully that will help as well ;)

I've always been a shedder, but, thankfully, I have very thick hair. After surgeries I've had a couple of surgeries in the past and after childbirth, I experienced heavy shedding. I started loosing a great deal of hair, especially in the shower, at about six weeks out from surgery. I would estimate it a wad about the size of a nickel to a quarter on a daily basis. I also have to clean the bathroom floor after styling my hair. I'm a little over four months out now, and I noticed just this week, that my hair loss is pretty much back to normal, and it basically happened overnight. I keep asking my hair stylist if my hair is appearing to thin, and she has reassured me that my hair is still thick. It must be growing in as fast as it's falling out is my only explanation, because I've lost a ton of it.

Mine thinned. I think it is mostly only noticeable to me. I am no longer losing but I haven't regained much.

I notice the difference mostly on the top around my bangs which are thinner and a little more scalp shows through.

I also had perfect ringlet curls before and now they are looking a little more "frazzled." My curl texture was also affected but that might be pregnancy related and/or weight loss related.

I miss my hair, but it is a small price to pay for getting to goal.

I am 5 mos out now and I think, basically overnight my hair loss has finally slowed! I will cut my hair shorter in the next month in hopes that it will start to grow back and be thicker again!

I've noticed the same problem but only recently. I'm 3 months post op. Not sure what's going on but i'm wondering if it's because i'm not getting enough protein.

Try to keep your protein up. Dr told us 90 days from surgery we may see some hair loss. Due to being put to sleep and the loss of protein for about 24 hours. This shall pass if you have continue with your proteins at the max 60-90 example. Some hair loss as well will come from the Thyroid issue as well. Hang in there!

I am 5 months out from lap band surgery have lost about 25 pounds, and have noticed that my hair loss is all over my body....for example the hair on my head is thinner yes, but I have alot less hair on my arms and legs too. Maybe it is stress??(I lost my mom in November) or getting older....I am 48. HELP I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this!!!!!!!!!????????????
