New to Diabetes and Lap Band

Recommended Posts

Hi to all,

I got band June 3rd and I'm type 2 diabetic for 15 years or so. I thought after my surgery I would be off insulin but I'm not. I take way less insulin than before. I take humalog 3 times a day an average of 3 units per meals and Levemir at nights (20 units). On top of that I take Metformin 2 pills twice a day. I read that if you've been on insulin more than 6 or 7 years you're chance on being off insulin is slim. I read that after my surgery. Mind you, I would of had the surgery no matter what but I would like to have your input on that matter. Is there any of you that are diabetic for many years, got the surgery and was able to get off insulin? If so, are you taking any meds? I'm the first patient to have that surgery in Bathurst Hospital, in New-Brunswick Canada. I'm suppose to go for my first fill July 20th.

I'm anxious to hear from you,

clempier:huh2:

I was diagnosed Dec. 08 with a preop BS of 240. I've done okay with diet control and exercise but know DM type II is progressive and just haven't been able to lose weight. I'm 56 and I don't have time to fool around anymore. Health is so precious. I had my first appointment last week and with my insurance should be banded sometime in November. I'm worried about the eating changes but really excited about moving forward.

Clempier: I've been diabetic for 15 years now. I was not on insulin, but several medications... too many and could not lose weight because of the meds. After my surgery, my readings were normal. Then they started inching up and they put me on sliding scale insulin. Then they added 1000 mg of metformin 2 times a day. My weight loss stopped at that point. They've now taken me off the sliding scale insulin and put me on lantus at night and still the metformin. Am waiting to see if my weight loss starts up again. I tried to get my doc to take me off the metformin, but he said I needed it to protect my pancreas and in any case it would not affect weight loss... but it's sure funny that since I've started it, the weight loss has stopped. I have to say, if I had it to do over again, I still would do the surgery. I've lost 45 pounds and feel a whole lot better. I'm just disappointed that I seem to have just come to a screaching halt with the weight loss. Want to lose another 50 pounds. I have to add that every other person here that had surgery around the time I and were diabetic, are totally off their meds and insulin if they were on it.

I have been a diabetic for more than 12 years, in 2007 I went on insulin and in August of last year was put on an U500 insulin (yes that is a 5X concentrated insulin). I was banded in March of 2009. I am completely off all insulin, oral diabetes meds as well as all of my blood pressure and cholesterol meds. It was one of the happiest days of my life. I have lost 100 pounds. I was able to get off the insulin because my pancreas was still producing insulin. You can have the doctor run a blood test to tell this or not. This will assist you in knowing if it will be possible to get off the insulin. I hope this helps.

Hi Westonrose,

Thank you so much for telling me that. By the way, for a 40 years old lady you sure don't look like it. You look like a 30 year old one.

I was banded June 3rd of this year and I lost 45 pounds so far. Probably because I'm diabetic and I'm 50 years old the weight is going down really slowly but at least it's going down not up as it use to be. I have an appointment with my Dr. in 2 days and I'm going to ask if she can ask for that test. Thank you.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
