Protein Powder Smell

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

I am 1 1/2 months post-op and am having problems getting in my Protein. My problem with the powder mixes is not the taste, but the smell. I tried the unflavored powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury. I didn't notice a taste, but I could not get past the horrible smell and ended up sending it back for a refund. I don't notice the smell in the premade shakes, but I can't afford 2-3 of those a day. Any suggestions for a Protein Powder with no smell?

Thanks in advance!

I am just wondering why at 6 weeks or more post-op, you are drinking Protein Shakes. I am just over three weeks post-op and since day three have been eating (at my doctor's orders) mushy Protein (eggs, tuna, canned chicken, cottage cheese, turkey chilli. My doctor specifically said not to rely on protein shakes. I only use them if I am on the run. Gastric bypass patients need them, but not band patients. Since I have never used the powder, I don't know what they smell like. Good luck, but ask your Dr. if you can eat mushy protein instead.

Giddyupgrandma - My doctor suggests Protein shakes on an ongoing basis, even several years out. He recommends one mid-morning and one mid-afternoon.

Mimilou - thanks for the advise. I never thought of a travel mug.

The premixed EAS ones are the best to me too, but they get kinda pricey. I have tried a lot of shakes that I just cant get over the smell, but designer whey Protein is pretty good that way. Also, if you like coffee, you can mix in some instant coffee or something like the international delights powders and it will mask the smell a bit.

I, too, still do Protein Shakes. I use Carnation Instant Breakfast and use Beneprotein which is flavorless, smell free and tasteless. It can be purchased online at Walgreens.com.

Ugh, I know what you mean - I was the same with baby formula. Thank goodness I was a good cow and made plenty of breastmilk becuase just the smell of formula was enough to make me hurl. And I know that Protein Powder smell, I hate it too.

I like the EAS and addeither a crystal light orang or another flavor. Using fruit does the sma never notice any smell. My dr just makes a point of makin sure we dont use the Proteins shakes as a Meal Replacement, only to keep our protien grams up, most days I have one after my 5 am workout, frozen slush to take in the car for my 50 ile commute. for my height proteins should be at 70g /day. They figure based on height iam only5'2". The more fat you loose you will need to make sure you get the Protein in to keep you r body balanced.

I am so jealous. I can't eat any of your mushie foods for 5 weeks!!!!!!!!!!! It's protein shakes for me too!!!

I agree about the unjury smell. But I like that you can add it to stuff and not taste it. I use EAS a lot. Got a HUGE bag at Sam's for $20. Haven't even made a dent in it. It's chocolate flavor. I don't think it smells at all.

I bought the GNC Pro Performance Unflavored whey Protein powder to mix into Soups to add Protein so I'm not relying simply on shakes and other protein supplements. Lemme tell ya, when I mixed it in the chicken broth, I thought I would hurl and die!! It was nasty!! It had a slimey consistency and smelled bad!! Please, trust me! Don't try that one! Gross!!!

My doc gave me a box with about 20 samples prior to surgery and I've been enjoying them. They're made by Smart Forme, I believe, and they're good. The fruit drink is like kool aid but has 15g of protein for a 6-8oz serving. Can't beat that! I actually met my goal for 90g of protein today! Woohoo!! :rolleyes2:)

I don't know what kind of shakes my Dr is going to make me drink. But, he did say that I must only use the kind the nutritionist tells me too. He said many patients do not have good weight loss and it's because they are drinking Protein Shakes that are not thick enough.

Let us know what he gives you! We are all about the weight lose! But, the Protein drinks are all over the board, just like the pre & post-op diets.

Silly Doctors!

I dont like the smell or the texture. I have to agree with the helloPenny though.. EAS is a great brand and I tend to buy the Myoplex ready to drink shakes. I buy the 42oz pack and drink half mid morning and the other half in the evening. A pack from Target (often hard to find as they sell out fast) and Wal-mart goes for about 9.99 (give or take a dollar) a pack. do not buy from GNC - they are very expensive. Vitamine Shoppe is decent too, they sell for 12.99. But I make sure - budget-wise - the shakes are a priority. I do not care for the powdered as it seems way too thick for me to drink, especially when my band gets tight from swelling.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
