What's Normal after surgery?

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

I'm new here and I'm hoping to get answers to questions. I was justed banded on Sept. 29th and I'm doing well so far. Not any pain from the incisions, but gas is another story:redface:. I don't know what "normal" is supposed to feel like at this point. I sometimes get a pain that feels like a gas bubble under my breast. I don't know when I feel full (still on liquids) and/or if I feel full. I've also felt depressed, wanting to cry, mourning eating out, angry and a little embarrassed that I've gotten myself into this place (gaining and not being able to lose the weight). Are so many emotions normal? I'd like to get feedback from those at the same place and pasted this point in their journey.

You have to create your new normal. They didn't band our brains ;-)

Here's what I do when I get myself all wrapped around myself. I pretend I'm talking to my best friend. Would I ever talk to my best friend the way I talk to myself, no way, I love her...love yourself!

We have changed our anatomy, drastically changed how we eat and what we eat, of course there's a period of adjustment. Yes, I had gas, yes I was scared, yes I got depressed that OMG what have I done...take a deep breath, visit your dietician or counselor or talk to your best friend. This is life changing...new normal!

Everything that you are feeling is normal as far as I'm concerned. Why do I say that? Because I went through the exact same feelings you are going through. I was banded 9/3/08 and feel fantastic now. I remember thinking what the heck did I get myself into! Don't worry, these feelings will go away and you will be feeling great soon. I'm down 26 pounds and am really happy with the way I feel and am finding it pretty easy to accommodate my band when I go out to eat with my family. I don't break any rules and am still able to enjoy a restaurant. So, give it a few more weeks and you'll feel so much better. Good luck with everything!

Hi

I know what you mean about the gas! I feel like a walking fart machine to be blunt. I also get gas pains, but they are under my ribs. I am swollen like a pumpkin as of today, I don't have much pain. I am 45 years old and was banded on Sept. 30. I am not glad to hear that you are swollen but it makes me feel better knowing that it is normal. My daughter was banded on Sept. 25 and her stomach has actually gone down.

I was banded on the 29th of Sept and I could have written your post! Just yesterday, I had a crying jag asking myself why I did this and felt overwhelmed and scared. Today, I am better, but I feel like the goodyear blimp. I have enough gas to solve the gas crisis... I'm hoping it will get better too!

Wpmen are such emotional eaters, so we do get down when we don't have the Ben and Jerry support system. Try getting a Victoria Secrets catalog and pick out clothing you will wear with your new body. The gas will go away soon.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
