Any one not have pre-op diet???

Recommended Posts

My surgeon doesn't do pre-op diets. He says that most people don't do them so it isn't worth the fight? Anyone else like this?

NO!!

That doesn't sound right at all. The purpose of the pre-op diet is to shrink the size of your liver to make the surgery easier on the doctor, thus making it safer for you. I would seriously question a doctor who thinks a pre-op diet isn't necessary.

I did not have a pre op diet and had the lap band on August 16, 2008. I only had to do liquids the day before surgery. I have been doing great and have had no problems. Surgery went great.

I will be banded 9/9 and I do not have a pre-op either. I do have a day before surgery Clear Liquids diet and fleet bowel cleanse. I was told that the Dr. does not want any food in your bowel in the event that the bowel is nicked during surgery. That could lead to infection. If you eat so much as a piece of toast in the 24 hrs before surgery they will reschedule you.

well then, consider me ill informed

No. What you said has a lot of truth to it also. The liver can be very fatty. I was also told that if you are super morbid obese or if you carry your weight around your stomach then you may want to lose some weight. It makes it easier for your surgeon. Our surgeons are very skilled, when in doubt -ask them.

my doctor didn't ask for a pre-operative diet neither

and he is on of the best in Jeddah he did the surgery for 3 of my friends without any complications nor pre-operative diets

i guess it is just optional or depending on the patients liver size

and the amount of fatty tissue in the abdominal cavity

Pre ops are often not necessary here in Australia, and I think docs use their judgement with the weight/shape of the patient. Being a BMI of 36 with a huge bum, but relatively less obese midsection, I didnt have to do it. I think it also is relevant what sort of lifestyle you lead - a heavy drinker/junk food eater will nearly always have a big fatty liver.

I was lucky thogh - I'd just had a liver ultrasound scheduled by my overzealous GP when I asked for a referral to the surgeon, so I knew for a fact I didnt have an enlarged or fatty liver.

DH being male and with a big belly had to do it!

But statistically, open surgeries (or no surgery at all) due to a huge liver are very rare, given the difficulty of that stupid Optifast diet, it is not an unreasonable or very risky chance to take not to do a preop. there is a 99% chance you'll be fine for surgery anyway - figure of speech, not actual statistic!

I don't have to either. My surgeon doesn't do them unless you are really center heavy. The other surgeon in the practice does two weeks of all liquid before surgery, another week of liquids after and then mushies.

I did not have a pre-op diet and do not know if my doctor required it of others.

I didn't have to do a pre op diet... mine consisted of eating at my favorite Italian place at 7pm the night before surgery!

Doc told me I could eat what I wanted as long as I was done eating 12 hours before surgery. I had surgery at 8 am the next day haha

No preop diet. Liquids only after 10am the day before surgery.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
