Crying :( - High White Blood Cell Count

Recommended Posts

I am SOOO upset. My surgery is scheduled for Aug 1st. I've done everything required & I'm so ready for this. I went to my PCP for my pre-op testing on Thursday. The bloodwork I did at the beginning to middle of June, (I had edema at the time, all gone now), was 14 and the max should be 10.5. No one ever called me from the drs office to tell me this (SO PISSED!). Anyway, she took new blood for my pre-op testing, but what if it's still high??? I'm hoping the June elevated white blood cells were from the edema in my legs. She put me on antibiotics for a sinus infection that I think I'm getting to be safe. What if the count is still up?? I need medical clearance by 7/17 & I am going on a cruise July 20th!!! I'll get the results Monday & hopefully they'll be ok. Please someone make me feel better & say they went through the same thing. I'm hysterical over this!!:tt2:

This happened to me too. I'd been suffering from a sinus infection and bronchitis about 3 weeks before surgery. The sinus infection cleared up, but the bronchitis was slower. I then got put on steriods to help knock out the cough and inflammation. Anyway, the long and the short of it was that I still had an elevated white blood cell count a couple of days before surgery. I was extremely worried that they would not do the surgery, but they did. They just gave me broad spectrum antibiotics during surgery and afterwards. I'm doing great. No problems :tt2:

If your WBC is high then that is from an infection within the body. I'm sure you will be fine if your edema is all healed now. If for some reason your count is high and there is an infection lingering in your body wouldn't you rather find out before than after? That would only make your recovery time longer. Trust me, I do know how disappointing it can be. I had my surgery scheduled for a Mon. and on the Th. before I was sitting in pre-op when the office called down to say my insurance wasn't going to cover the surgery after they had already pre-approved it. Grrr...extremely frustrating! Left me in tears, and now almost 5 mths. later I still am trying to find a way. So...I say, better safe than sorry. Good luck to you! Oh, and don't let it ruin your cruise. Have fun!

I definitely agree better safe than sorry, but it just is so disappointing. I'm calling the drs office about noon Monday to get the results. If they are still high, I'll go everyday if I have to to get blood work done because since I've been on antibiotics since Thursday, they should definitely go down, right??? I even asked the dr if I had cancer, and she laughed at me. So I guess that's a good thing :tt2:

I am going through the same thing. My surgery is on July 16th. I am taking an antibiotic for a tooth that I thought may have been trying to get infection. Went to the dentist and she said no but left me on the antibiotic just in cast. My PCP has me on another antibiotic for my sinus infection and a steriod dose pack. I am to repeat my third blood work this week to see. I have my fingers crossed because it was only going to give me about three weeks after surgery before back to driving my school bus in this South Louisiana temps and no place to stop and get sick and diarrhea would not be good either.. Hope all goes well with you too.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
