    • Yes- my doctor says it's okay
    • Yes- but my doctor says not to
    • No- because my doctor says no
    • No- but not because of the band, just cause I don't like it

lindsey- that's one of those most embarassing moments I would think of later. You're right, not telling would have been worse! That sounds like an awful experience, I'm so glad you shared!

I am just going to be blunt. And YES I was addicted to Diet Pepsi and Diet Coke since I was 16, way back in the Cyclamate days. (I know I didn't spell that correctly-must be my age)

In the end, Carbonation will stretch your pouch. That can cause slipage or errosion. Do you really want to take that chance after all you have been through?

If you need something sweet, get a bottle of Water, a single crystal light, and drink away.

If you need the bubbles, Well, we are all Adults and we have made bad choices before. I guess that is why we ending up needing the bands in the first place.

Oh boy, this will be the hardest thing to do for me when the time comes. Yes I'm hooked BIG TIME. I run with one either in my hands or near me 18+ hours a day! But after reading all the comments I guess that if this means I can give up Diet Pepsi & Diet Rite, I can do anything! Seeing as how I've not even started on anything other than making up my mind to do this, I'll start trying to wean myself off of them NOW rather than wait till time that I'm told that I have to. This is going to be hard. Very hard.

I was a full fledged diet coke head for years - since Baby #3, I've limited it to three a day, but I always had those three each day.

Since the day I was banded, I haven't had a sip, and I miss it a little, but not enough to risk band-slippage.

Just a sip of soda is very uncomfortable going down. I was addicted to regular ginger ale...can't have it anymore...it hurts and isn' worth the pain or risk of slippage!

I was drinking dcoke as much as I wanted but then my whole left side began to hurt all of the time. It took me a while to attribute it to coke, but have stopped and no more pain. Too bad b/c Id rather have dcoke than food!

I used to drink lots of soda. I was hooked on Dr. Pepper. Since surgery I've cut it off, but everyone once in awhile, I want a sip. A couple days ago, I took a VERY small sip of my husband's and held it in my mouth until it fizzed up and had no more fizzy bubbles. Can anyone explain the real danger with soda. My doc says no soda, but doesn't really offer a satisfactory reason as to why.

I can live with no soda... and I don't crave it or anything. I've been so good since I cut it out and have been very surprised at my will power regarding this subject, since I have unsuccessfully tried to eliminate it from my diet during pre band life. I'm just wondering about people's perceptions on soda.

I can drink Sunkist diet orange because it has pretty low carbonation. I tried others and the carbonation hurts me.

I only have one a day or so. I think the idea about artificial sweetners is correct- it makes you crave sugar and food. So I'm drinking more Water.< /p>

All my skinny friends love Diet Sunkist now too!

I also used to love!!! Diet Coke and now hate it- tastes like chemicals since my surgery so I drink water at resturants now- it's good thing!

I have also taken a small sip of my husband's soda and did NOT like it! It burned my mouth and tasted like thick Syrup. Even though I waited for the carbonation to dissipate in my mouth before I swallowed, I burped several times afterward.

I was just banded a month ago, so I don't know if this will change. Maybe you guys can tell me if you had the same thing happen. I can't stand the taste of most artificial sweeteners now. That means I can't drink Crystal Light or any of the other diet drinks. I love Water, but sometimes I just crave something with taste! I've been drinking hot tea with Splenda to help with that. I'm not very good at making iced tea for some reason.

As of this Wednesday I'll be able to eat fruit, so maybe that will be my saving grace. I would like to get off of the artificial sweeteners, because I agree with others that it makes you crave sweets. Besides, it's crap for you health.

My nutritionist was talking about soda/carbonation in group the other night and even if soda sits for 3 months open on the counter, when they put a balloon over the top of the bottle it fills with the gases in the soda!

I'm not a fan of most carbonated drings. Coke's weird, Pepsi has too few bubbles, Sprite-let's just say soda was never meant to be clear. And the rest are too sweet.

I would have Dr. Pepper maybe twice a week and that would be it, in the pre-band days. But now... I find myself wanting the bubbles. Dr. Pepper bubbles, ginger ale bubbles...

I tried to have a few sips of soda with a bit of chicken... That was bad. Not only was in uncomfortable, it was also burp-city for a good fifteen minutes. That is just not cute. Soda on its own though, is still burp city, but less painful and violent than when there's chicken involved.

I am hooked on soda. This past weekend was THE WORST. I'll guess that I had 8-10 REGULAR (not even DIET) sodas the last 2 days - how freakin' sad is that? (I don't need any preaching, please) I know the dangers and I know I shouldn't have any carbonation, and I know I shouldn't consume that many liquid calories, and I know I need to drink Water in place of these demon drinks. I need to kick this terrible habit once and for all. I guess I just needed to confess this to all of you. Thanks for listening!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
