That's why I went fo the walk. Walking helps me to get my thoughts together. Hope everyone is well.

Hi karenin. So sorry to hear about your Mom. Was she hurt badly. Hope your search is short and all goes well. It's beautiful here in Kansas. We are heading out to a community picnic in a bit. Congrats on your great weight loss.

Hi, All..

Yes, it's been rather quiet here lately!

Its been one month since my knee replacement surgery and I'm pretty pleased with my progress. Home nursing and PT have both released me. Have had complete extension from day one of home PT.... that's supposed to be the hardest, and I'm up to 114 degrees flexion. I start outpatient PT tomorrow, but just four sessions.. two this week, two next week. Then we head south in the RV for the winter. They'll teach me exercises I can do on my own. I'm walking 1/2 mile every day, sometimes twice a day. At first I was using a walker, then a cane, but tonight I walked it for the first time without even using the cane. Had DH walk with me and he had the cane just in case I decided I needed it after all. But I did fine and didn't need it. I do two trips around our condo loop for 1/2 mile. I'm taking very few pain pills, none yet today.. will take one before I go to bed... maybe.

I've lost 6 lb since surgery. Walking is helping... haven't been able to walk 1/2 mile in probably more than 10 years.

Sounds like you are doing great Phyl. I too am facing knee replacement, but the ortho said it would be better for me to get banded first and lose some weight. My recovery would be easier he said. I won't be banded until spring, so have a ways to go. It sure sounds promising though to hear how well you are doing.

Phyl Glad to hear that you are doing well with your recovery! Sounds like you are really working at your therapy. I sure know what you mean about not being able to walk 1/2 mile before my LAP-BAND® sugery. It's amazing when I think back to all the things I had gotten used to not being able to do, and what a blessing it is to be able to get things back like walking, bending, crossing my legs, fitting in a booth, no seat belt extenders on a plane, having energy, etc.

Great Job Phyl. I'm two years out. Had my left knee done at my heaviest and the recovery was really hard. I'm planning to have my right knee done in June. Looking forward to being thinner. My neighbor is having BOTH her knees done today.

OML I wish her well. Keep up the good work. Judy

Thanks to all of you for the kudos!

My ortho tried to put me off, too, as he did LAST year. I just didn't want to wait another year to be able to do some walking! So I did some research online about obesity and knee replacement and everything I found said that patients should NOT be denied knee replacement because of obesity. Risk of infection is only very slightly higher in obese people. So I went back in and said... steroid injection didn't work, I want to go through with surgery.

Yes, it is a BLESSING not to have to use a seat belt extender!! And have the tray table come down and not rest on my stomach!! YAY!

Yes, I've been very pleased with recovery/rehab so far! Four more sessions of PT (starting outpatient today after a month of in home), and then we're on our way south for the winter!

I wanted to have both knees done at once but the doctor wouldn't do it. Would definitely be a challenge. I hope your neighbor does well! I have a partial in my right knee but doc says it needs to be converted. Apparently the hardware is coming loose because of the weight loss. He's watching it for now, but I may be having the right done about next June, too!

Hey Phyl!

Good to hear that you are doing so well!! Fantastic news. You will really be in great shape for walking this winter in sunny California!:)

Sorry to tell you that we can't meet you and Pioneer in New Mexico. We have decided to make the trip later. I know how you were looking forward to the "short cut" to California!!:tongue2:

Perhaps next year!

One thing I have to do is to get my second fill on Oct 6th. I am looking forward to that!!

Well, I better stop for now. Again, congrats on the amazing progress with your knee.:)

Thanks, Diana! New PT I saw today was impressed, too, as was her co-worker. Showed me some new exercises, added ankle weights, and put me on stationary bike for a few minutes. She said 3 minutes, but then she set the timer for 3 HOURS! What can I say?! She's blonde! LOL! She kept glancing at it wondering why the buzzer hadn't gone off yet until I said, Uh... I think you set it for 3 hours instead of 3 minutes! Duh! So I did 5 minutes on the bike. It felt great! We have one at the condo clubhouse I can use and some really nice ones at the RV park we stay at.

Oh, well... don't think I could've talked DH in to the NM "short-cut" anyway!! LOL! If you guys get anywhere near Palm Springs this winter, let me know!

Anyone have any suggestions regarding what bicycle is the best?

Hi everyone. Haven't posted for awhile, but roxie's request for the best bike intrigued me. I find most biycle seats very hard on the backside and changed to a treadmill. If anyone has an idea about the saddle of the bikes being improved, I certainly would like to know the make.

Doddie

I have one of those pedal things you buy at the durable medical supply stores or Walgreens drug store. It is just the pedals and sits on the floor in front of any chair you like. The tension adjusts to make it easier of harder to pedal. It's worked wonders for me. I was getting injections in my knee every six months before my LAP-BAND®. Now with the weight loss and daily "biking" my knee feels remarkly better and I have much more flexibilty in my knees. The best thing is that I place it in front of my living room chair and pedal away while I watch TV.

WOW! Thanks. I have never heard of them but will look immediately. I have arthritis in the knees and hip finding the treadmill a bit difficult and I dislike the bike because of the discomfort of the seats. I certainly am enthusiastic to find these pedals.

Bought my husband a bike last summer and he couldn't stand the seat either... even though he has a skinny butt. So I found a wide seat on Amazon.com and he loves it. I think it was 20 bucks. Before it came he had a huge piece of foam wrapped around the seat and secured to it with DUCT TAPE!! Of course, what else! He's a guy!

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
