Hey 50 & over gang We have a new spot

Recommended Posts

I wasn't sure if I belonged here or in the Twenties group. You see I stopped celebrating my birthday at 29 and just started celebrating the anniversary of my 29th birthday. This became a problem when my son turned 25 last year

I'd love to know the demographics here for how many people are in each age group.

My oldest daughter is 35. I have 6 grandchildren. I will be 57 in March, but I would like to think I still have some good years to enjoy and have fun. Which is why I am having this surgery on the 24th of this month. Don't they say the Fifties are what the 30's used to be.

I'm 52 soon to be 53 on 29th of January - Son 37 - 3 grandkids 17 yrs - 14 yrs - 4 yrs. Had surgery 7/07 so that I can see the grandkids get married and hopefully see my great-grandkids too..

I am 60 lbs lighter and FEEL 20 yrs younger - yes the 50's are the new 30's - we aren't as old as our parents were at our age...

Truely I don't want to be younger - heck I have learned alot in these 52 yrs - I don't want to have to start over - but if you could give me the body of a 30yr old with the brains of a 52 yr old. I would take that ..

Hello, I turned 56 in December. I have two daughters age 37 and 31. I had lap-band surgery on Nov. 30th, 2007, so I am still learning all about this experience. Brenda

Hello to all of you 50's bandsters.

I am 53 and I have one son who is 22.

Banded 12-12-07.

Still catching on myself.

Seems I don't have the same amount of energy that I had preband.

And - that wasn't much.

How about all of you?

C.N.

C.N. I lost some energy at first also. I was banded Nov 19,07. Last week, I started to take vit. B complex and it has made a world of difference.

I have two children, girls 23 and 27, no grandchildren. I am with Indiogirl, give me the body and I want to keep the experience.

I turned 55 in Oct.

I have a daughter who had gastric bypass 2 years ago. That's how I found out about Lap Band. I went with her to her support groups and heard about it was very excited that losing weight was actually a possibility for me. I would never have gastric bypass. I was really against her having it.

It has worked out well for her, and she is pregnant with my first

grandchild. The pregnancy has been hard for her. She can't seem to keep up her levels of B12 and has to have shots, so she is tired all the time.

I also have a son that will be 24 next month. He is 5'10" and weighs 140. He eats whatever he wants and obviously doesn't have whatever genes my daughter and I have!

Thank you! I am very excited to say the least. I just hope the rest of her pregnancy goes okay since the first 6 months have been so difficult for her. This is supposed to be her best trimester. She isn't having morning sickness anymore, but she is like a walking zombie.

Hi Sandy,

It's hard to stay an age you want when your kids keep catching up,isn't it? I'm 52, have 4 kids and 3 Grandkids. I'm being banded on Wednesday 16th. Good luck to all that have been done and those like me with it coming up soon.

I gotta say that my pregnancy was one of the happiest times in my life - i was lucky no morning sickness - just had to pee 24/7 and had heart burn cuz i ate so much hot sauce:eek:...

Well, I will keep good thoughts that the next 3 months are easier

You think you are excited now - wait till the baby's born OMG you will be beaming.

Welcome, Gometros! I'll turn 59 in June. I have ten children (all boys but 9 )--the oldest turns 39 in June and the youngest is 20. I also have 6 grandchildren (all girls but 5 ) who are the light of my life and the biggest reason I had the surgery last March. I really want to live to see them grow up and to dance at their weddings! Grandkids are wonderful--definitely the reward for raising your children.

Good luck on your journey!

I'm right there with everyone else. I'm 54 and will be 55 in June. I have one son 36 and one daughter 35. They have given me 2 beautiful granddaughters, my son's is 10 mo and my daughters is 10 yrs!!! I did this because I want to be there when they get married. I really started pursuing the lap-band when Raegan was born last March. I just wish I had done it sooner.

Indigo Girl: I'm with you, we're working on the body, but already have the life experience!!!!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
