6 weeks post op frustrated with weight loss

Hi all I am new here I am 44 y female. I had my gastric bypass on 6/11/2025 and started my 1000 calorie liver shrink 5/25. starting weight was 301 lost 17 pounds in the 2 week diet and weighed 284 the day of surgery. I am now 6 weeks out tomorrow and I feel like I am just not losing weight like I should be. I lost 4.8 lbs 1 week out 11.2 2nd week 2.2 3rd week 5 lbs , 3 lbs and then 1.8 lbs last week total of 28.2lbs since the surgery. My worry is the last 4 weeks have been so low in weight loss idk what I could be doing wrong. I am obsessive when it comes to tracking food and calories I have spread sheets lol. I average about 450 calories a day 10 g fat 17 carbs 9 sugar and 60 protein. how can the weight not be melting off? Should I worry?

You've lost 28 pounds in 6 weeks and 45 pounds in 2 months. The weight IS melting off. For most people, losing 1 pound per week is considered good, and 2 pounds per week is aggressive. You've more than doubled that. Now, having more excess weight than the average person will allow you to lose weight faster, but averaging 5 pounds per week is an amazing success.

Have you had follow-up visits with your surgeon/team? What have they said about your rate of weight loss? Weight loss is neither linear nor instantaneous, so it is extremely normal to have fluctuations and sometimes even stalls (when you don't lose any weight for a period of time, sometimes weeks). As long as your weight is decreasing, you're headed in the right direction.

I know that when you get to the point of making the decision to have weight loss surgery, it feels urgent. You've probably gone through a long process just to qualify for the surgery and you're ready to be thin NOW. But remember that you didn't gain all the weight overnight and you're not going to lose it overnight. You need to have patience and remember that you have the rest of your life to be thin. There are actually potential hazards with losing weight too quickly, so don't be in such a rush.

Thank you for replying i had read that people should lose 5-15 pounds a week so when i seen 1.8 last week I wanted to cry. I hear that the amount of weight you lose in the 90 days is how much you can expect to lose in the 6 months after so I am terrified that i won't get to 50 pounds in the 3 months because i want to lose over 100 lbs. I had a check up at 3 weeks and they said I was doing great but I had been losing larger weight then. I guess I just had a preconceived idea in my mind of what i should be losing lol.I stall for like 3-4 days i was like did the doctor even remove anything haha. Thank you again for responding it means a lot and I am looking through all the posts for guidance.

Never define your success on losing a certain amount of weight by a certain date. Doing so only leads you to think you’re failing simply because you cannot precisely predict your rate of loss. There are only averages which might give you an idea. No hard and fast rules. There are too many factors, many you can’t control, that affect your rate of loss.

The only people who lose at a higher rate in the beginning are those who start at a much higher weight than you did (like those on My 600lb Life) but as their weight drops, their rate of lose slows too.

Your rate of loss slows as the months pass because it’s supposed to. As the weeks pass, you slowly eat larger portions of a variety of foods to get in more of the nutrients you need and as you start to develop better eating habits. You will lose more one week & less another week. You will experience stalls of a few days to a couple of weeks. These are about the only things you can rely upon.

I lost my weight over about 18 months. This is not uncommon. Many keep losing up to around 2 years after surgery. In the last 12 months I averaged about 1kg (2lbs) a month but the reality was in the last couple of months it was less than a kilo.

I’ve entered my stats in the various calculators that give you an idea of your rate of loss at certain points of time after surgery and how much you can expect to lose in total & they weren’t really accurate for me. Didn’t mean I was a failure at any of those point. Just like you’re not a failure.

Celebrate and enjoy every pound you lose and the benefits the loss brings to your life.

You've lost a significant amount of weight in a short amount of time. Perhaps its your expectations that are off. In fact, you've lost on the higher side of most other people with the same surgery in the same amount of time. Just trust the process, but if you still have concerns contact your bariatric surgeons office and speak to them. Otherwise, keep up the good job!
