Surgery done on the 22nd and home recovering. No bumps yet. How are my fellow surgery buddies doing?

My surgery was 2/21 and I was released from the hospital yesterday morning. There were some minor issues that caused the surgery itself to take longer, and the doctor wanted to do a swallow test before I was allowed anything to drink, so I ended up needing the extra night in the hospital. I'm not in much pain when I'm sitting or lying down, but it's tender when I'm walking around. It doesn't help that both arms hurt from IV and blood draws. Yesterday I managed about 32oz of Water plus just under 2 Premier Protein shakes. Hoping the tenderness goes away soon. No hunger at all, which is just kind of weird to realize.

Good morning! Glad to hear you both are doing well. I had my surgery on Thursday and came home yesterday. They found a hiatal hernia during surgery and went ahead and repaired that so I got two for one. I am doing OK as long as I keep pain meds in me. I’m not sure if the hernia causes more pain or what but, swallowing really does hurt like right in between my breasts. It took me a good half hour to get my morning pills down one at a time. I slept in the recliner last night and got more sleep than I did the whole time in the hospital! I agree about not feeling hungry. That’s kind of weird considering we haven’t had food in a long time. It’s great to have you all on the same journey with me!

I crushed my thyroid pill and emptied the omeprazole and ursodiol capsules into a little bowl and mixed all three with 2 Tbsp of applesauce. It took about 10 minutes to get that down. I'm going to need to check with my primary care doctor because my blood pressure the morning I left the hospital was 92/54, so I have not been taking my blood pressure med since they told me to stop it the day before surgery. I need to go check it at one of those machines at the drug store later today.

Your first week postop when you’re on the liquid diet, what does it feel like when you’ve had enough? I didn’t picture it feeling like this, but usually my first sip is OK, and then my second one hurts. Like right between my breasts, it hurts going down and then it’s like it tries to come back up and it hurts. Is that what feeling full is going to feel like now?

Hey!! Glad to hear you are doing good!! Same here. I had mine on the 19th. I’m still shocked that I’m not extremely hungry BUT I feel like I could eat anything I would want. I’m just drinking Protein Shakes tho.

Applesauce? Are you not on a liquid diet for 2 weeks? Did it hurt? That is a little low but honestly mine is usually about that low normally so I wouldn’t be super worried about it being that low. Are y’all having to do the Blood thinner shot? That thing is a *itch!! It burns….does it for y’all?

I never feel like that….that stinks for you. Are you taking the pink liquid medicine? Yeah I know I’m great with medicine names. Lol but that med is supposed to coat the stomach and help with digestion issues. I know from a friend that she said I will know when I’m full… like she can eat and then like start sweating and she knows she’s eating something she’s not supposed to or she needs to stop immediately. This only happened bc we went on a cruise like a year or less after she had bypass and she was still adjusting,

The blood thinner shot does sting the first few times it's injected. It also leaves some pretty good bruising in the area of the injections. I did have some itching, but it wasn't abnormal.
I was supposed to be on a 2 week post op liquid diet as well. But I was having issues with Constipation, in part because of Fiber not being in my diet. Even with taking Mirilax daily. So, they said I could start the puree'/soft food. I did eggs for a couple days with well mixed fat free refried Beans for the fiber. Then I've been adding steamed carrots, broccoli (no stems) and a small amount of sweet potato. I'm not having an issue now. About 1 to 1 1/4 measuring cup full of food is all I can handle. To get my Protein, I've been mixing Premier Protein powder with a 1/2 cup of Chobani plain zero sugar yogurt.

Yes, it burns almost every time for me. I am bruised too! My stomach at this point looks like I’ve been in a jail yard fight! Haha Omg eggs and refined Beans sounds like fine dining to me at this point!! I did eat like 1/3 cup of fat free low sugar vanilla Greek yogurt and it went down just fine but I’m nervous to try anything else at 5 days out. No Constipation for me, thankfully! Glad the addition of fiber helped you!

Applesauce is included on my list for full liquid diet, along with cream of wheat and yogurt. I'm not having to do blood thinners now that I'm home from the hospital, and I just have Tylenol for pain relief. My main concern with blood pressure is whether it will go back up so that I'll need the meds again. I haven't had such good readings in years, even with meds!

I am on 7 days clear liquid. Trying to get into a routine of sipping every 15 minutes or so. Even eating a popsicle makes me feel like I need to belch. Started 5 minutes on the treadmill and hopefully can do 5 minutes more before bed. I wish when they did discharge they handed you a mug that states on it how much to drink and when. I don’t remember most of what was said after surgery and my husband assumed I was paying attention when in truth I don’t even remember most of the day🤣

I can tell you what I was told. My dietitian came to visit and she said to try and get into Protein Shakes a day over the next seven days. She said if I can only get one that’s OK but two is definitely preferred. And then it’s very important to get minimum of 48 ounces of Water a day. That’s where I’m struggling with the water. I am not allowed to have anything tea or citrus flavored. Before the way I got my water in was with a mixture of Decaf tea crystal light and lemonade crystal light. I have some other flavors of crystal light and I’m trying to like them, along with just plain water. In the hospital they had me on the second day doing, 1 ounce of water every 15 minutes before graduating me to a shake and Jell-O. But basically for this week the crucial things were a minimum of 48 ounces of water and two shakes a day. Jell-O, putting, Popsicles, watered down cream of wheat, and yogurt are all OK I have also according to my doctor.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
