Being called "skinny"

Recommended Posts

I have lost quite a bit of weight... but, I have so much more to go (40 pounds). It KILLS me when people call me skinny in the hallway to refer to my losing weight. Does it bother any of you?

yes...I think that was usually a trigger for me that it was ok to eat this and that...and next thing I knew gained it right back

Thanks... but, I'm still huge (yes, I will get it off) I'm a size 18 now... which is a start I know you can appreciate it since I read somewhere else you started at a 30.. I was a 26. So, yes... I'm more normal now... but, skinny... that's off. Calling me that when I'm a size 8 will be a compliment... now it's kind of inappropriate.

I think it depends on the circumsances--if you have lost 150 lbs and are now in a normal range-then yes-it is a compliment. But as well meaning as people may be-if you have lost some and still have a lot to go and are obviously still obese-then being called skinny doesn't feel good. I base this on previous attempts to lose weight-lose a little bit-still over 200-a long way from skinny!

But then, this time will be different-I'm getting my band on the 28th!!

I think you need to see it from their eyes, they are seeing you making progress. I don't think they are trying be rude, they are trying to be sweet! Take it at less than face value, they see progress!

Good luck to you!

I don't think it is a rude thing but it is aggravating to me when I hear it in reference to me because I know I am far from skinny. At work folks call me "Skinny Minnie" all the time now. I try not to think much of it because could be called a lot worse. I don't have a formal goal for myself (well actually I would like to see Onderland even if it is 199). I have at least 50 pounds that I would like to lose but would be happy with 30 considering where I came from. My highest ever was 368/ on surgery day I was 304/today 242. I am grateful for what I have accomplished so far and look forward to more to come. I think they say it as a form of a compliment & a form of encouragement & acknowledgement but it is just something about that word.

I just wanted to know if anyone else knew how I felt. I do love the compliments... but, that one just gets to me. Thanks for all the responses everyone!

I love it when people call me skinny, I know that they are just encouraging me. And its cause they love me. I know I am not "skinny", but I will be someday, but in comparison to what I was????? I'll take being called skinny. At least it means that I have lost enough weight for them to notice. I started at 243 lbs and a size 22, now I am at 184 lbs, and a size 16, much more to go, but I love the journey I am on. Merry Christmas to all.

I'll take skinny over chunky, heifer, whale, two tons of fun, or "jeez, you've put on a lot of weight" any day. I just want to hug people when they call me skinny.

Everyone is commenting around me, also, about how great I look and how much I've lost (I'm still wearing my office dress clothes--just tightening my belts--I don't want to buy new "in-between" clothes). And yes, in a way it certainly is refreshing from being 'invisible'.

But as 4jin said, every time I've ever lost weight, the minute people started mentioning it, I took it as a "Get Out of Jail Free" card and thought, "Oh, now I can eat everything I want, just like all those skinny people I've ever watched!" :hungry:

It IS dangerous for me to get that mindset--because I KNOW my band is just a tool to help me--and if I don't stay on track forever, I can go right back up.

So yes, it's nice--but I'm like you: I'd prefer silence until I reach my personal goal. :)

Heck, if I got to a size 16 or 18 around my friends, I would be skinny! Most of my friends are size 22 and above. I do have like two or three skinny friends but the rest are bigger like me.

People at work, and my dad's friends all call me skinny. With 80lbs (at least) to go.

I take it for what it is, I'm skinny compared to 70lbs ago hah hah. Only bothers me when people who don't know me overhear it, I know they're thinking "Are you blind?"

I don't like it. Being called skinny is just as bad as being called fat (to me anyway).

I have had over 2 years of being called "Skinny" (I have been at goal for 18 months now) and it gets dammed old being told that you are "skin and bones!" and that you really shouldn't lose any more weight, "Are you sure you are eating enough?" and "maybe you should stop now" (that one was just last week. I haven't lost weight in 1.5 years!).

Learn to love it my friend! It is a compliment of the highest order. I get called skinny girl ALL the time at work. All I do is just smile and smile and smile!!!! I mean....DUH.....don't you WANT people to notice you are losing? I sure do! Just short of putting a neon sign over my head that says, "YEP, I'VE LOST ALMOST 60 POUNDS AND I AM PROUD AS PUNCH WITH MYSELF!!!" This is how people who know you and don't know you can go "Way to go kiddo!!!" in just a few short words! We former fatties need to stop getting so darned bent out of shape by what we perceive as every not politically correct comment that comes down the pike. Take it as the compliment it is meant to be and say "YOU BETCHA!" You don't have to say "thank you"....I just say "You betcha and stillworking on it!"

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
