tldr; for ME, in MAINTENANCE, carbs consumption makes little difference to my weight.

My NUT didn’t give me a carb goal/limit per se, but did instruct me to aim for my meals to consist of 25% carbs/starches (with another 25% being Protein and the remaining 50% to be low-glycemic veggies).

With that said, i did my own thing (and told her so): i ended up doing ultra-low carb, i.e., less than 25g NET carbs per day.

Got to goal in 7 months, remained carbophobic, lost a few more pounds and basically still went out of my way to avoid them. I wasn’t ultra-low carb as during weight loss phase, but i was still pretty low.

I appreciate all of the info! Its nice to see a full circle of how someone started and and got to goal and maintains. Its all very helpful and no post is too long. The idea of the surgery plus the Keto fat burning is why I'm so pro low carb in my head. I have done keto many times though (less than 40 carbs) and never lost any weight. I even used those ketone strips to make sure and they confirmed I was good, but even after doing the diet for 6 months, never lost more than 5 pounds. I never get the keto flu either, so I'm ok there but if it doesn't work for me, and you can maintain on higher amounts, I wonder if I can eat carbs and still be ok. I think I just have to try things out and see how it goes.

That is me! I am not hungry, I have no room because I'm constantly drinking Water and I still dream about bread and especially sweet breads. Same fear too of not being able to control the cravings when my hunger comes back.

doing low carb of 50 total carbs now for pre op diet and it’s hard!! (If i could minus Fiber it wouldn’t be so bad) and it has caused some intermittent issues due to reduced fiber intake (consuming some supplements now that i don’t count towards my 50 total, but would much rather use dietary fiber in foods)

i went through the “keto flu” back in August (foggy head, achy feeling , low energy) in about three days.

I also was ravenously hungry early on. my brother suggested that I increase my fat intake and that did the trick. I made cream cheese and Peanut Butter “fat bombs” with Sugar Free Chocolate chips and monkfruit… scooped them with a 3/4 ounce scoop and ate two of them a day as Snacks and it made the hunger disappear!

i do not think i could do this low long term, personally, but will be integrating the low carb approach into my post op dietary lifestyle. Being very selective with any sugars, flours and starches is fine.. but it’s hard for me without being able to have much beans/legumes/peas/etc. I would kill for a big bowl of refried Beans for dinner, but the total carbs are just too high pre op unless I am super cautious all day.

I basically lived off Beans & legumes during puree stage. The pureed meat thing just didn't work for me, so refried beans, lentil Soups, etc. with added unflavored Protein Powder was my go-to food.

That would be hard!

I did 25g NET carbs, so I didn’t count fibre nor sugar alcohols…

that sounds so wonderful.. totally there with you with the idea of puréed meat!! i am looking forward to surgery and getting to puréed just for being to eat the plant Protein Good lol

refried beans, stewed/puréed lentils and split pea Soup will be such a treat

net would be sooooo much easier… i do have a list of “free foods” i don’t need to count (broccoli, avocado, onions etc) and that helps … but outside that list it is a desert for fiber lol

oh and i don’t count sugar alcohols - but i just am not doing a lot of sweet for anything

If you aren’t allergic

2 cups almond flour, 2-3 egg whites, 1tsp vanilla or almond extract 1/2 cup granulated sugar substitute. Mix and shape in crescent moons. Bake at 350 for 17-20 minutes until golden brown around the edges.

If you don’t mind me asking, I have been researching Cookies for my annual cookie day and am quality learning just how many sweeteners are available today. Are they all interchangeable and just a matter of taste preference?? I just purchased sugar free choc

chips and mink fruit but I already have swerve (that tasted a little extra sweet to me). The ones you mentioned look easy enough for me. Are the like a sugar cookie??

There are carbs and then there are carbs, it's a big pot of good and bad. I look at it like this. Some, like sugary drinks or Desserts, are red light, I just eliminate them. Some are okay in small amounts, like Pasta, rice and bread, those are yellow light. Some, like greens and non starchy vegetables, are green light. I thought I could never live without my homemade bread, or pasta, but honestly, I'm fine with tiny portions or not at all.

Exactly! balance is the key to long term success!!

after the healing diet post op, i will have nothing will be off limits to me as my choice; but like you said some food are cautious with portions in small amounts and some are just occasional indulgence not everyday fare. I think that’s how i will be able to maintain a healthier life long term.

They’re actually a kind of Greek cookie. As far as sweetener it’s not all interchangeable. Stevia and swerve need to use about half which can affect the baking ratios. When it comes to certain ratios there are better options like Allulose or Monk Fruit blends.

There are carbs & there are carbs. And there are carbs in many foods not just the ones we automatically think of like bread, Pasta, crackers, etc.

Like others, I wasn’t given a carb limit. Just advised to keep them low & told no rice, bread or pasta as most people are. I was allowed instant oats from purée & then transitioned to traditional coarse rolled oats. While losing I got carbs from barley, legumes & other vegetables & (blue) berries. Still do. For example there are about 60g of carbs in 100g of chickpeas which is more than 100g of white bread but the chickpeas are a complex carb & much better nutritionally for you

In maintenance I was advised to look for multi/whole grains. I still keep my carbs lowish. Still don’t eat rice, bread or pasta not just because they are too filling & sit too heavily but also were foods I easily indulged in.

yeah, in MY experience, going keto/low-carb is very effective for losing weight rapidly in a relatively short amount of time.

BUT...maintaining this lifestyle long term is challenging for most (not all, but MOST)

The problem with us as a community has always been KEEPING the weight OFF (i mean how many times in the past have we lost a bunch of weight only to gain it back, and sometimes plus more)

So when most (not all!) get to the keto/low-carb burnout phase, or just slowly let things slide, there needs to be another plan in place to maintain one's current weight and usually thats just finding your own balance of calories and activity level...and make that your lifestyle.

P.S. not to say that Keto/low-carb is not an unattainable lifestyle choice. i have several friends who have done this for many years (and one who's been at it for over 20 years!) ...interestingly enough none of whom have ever been obese...not sure if there is a correlation there...

I'm a guy, 13 months post bypass, and honestly I only count calories, and Protein. I try to keep it under 1500 cals, and always try to hit the 90g of protein the dietician wants me at. Carbs work themselves out, because I may want that muffin, but if it's 300 calories of pure carbs, that's a fifth of my daily count, and it does nothing for actually feeling full, so I may eat half, or less, and add a protein.🤷🏾‍♂️

      2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

      I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

      Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

        I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

        Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

      On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
