Going Out To Event 2 weeks Post-Op - should I cancel or play it by ear?

Recommended Posts

I have tickets to the opera on May 29 which is just two weeks post-op. I’m wondering if I should exchange/refund them. The flyer for this opera just arrived in today’s mail and it looks so beautiful that I would hate to miss it. Will I be ok taking the train and sitting for a long while? Would that be pushing myself too much? Does anyone have similar going out after surgery stories that you can share?

Not quite 2 weeks PO, but I went to an event at 3 weeks post op. It was about 5 hours long and i was just fine. Didn’t eat anything at the party, but that was expected (i brought Protein Powder with me to mix into my water).

One week earlier (at 2 weeks), i was still taking naps though…but that may have been related to my complete lack of energy cuz I wasn’t really eating those first two weeks.

Two weeks out I would have been able to. Like ms.sss if anything I was taking naps still but if you have the time to rest and still go then you should be fine.

You’ll have to play it by ear because we all recover differently. I went to a joint 60th birthday party just short of three weeks post surgery. I took a Protein Shake - people thought it was Water. Only problem was the party was in their small backyard,100+ guests & no room for seating except their garden bench seat. It was used continuously by their daughter’s boyfriend’s sister who’d had a baby 2 months earlier & a revolving group of her family members. (A friend asked if I could sit down & they refused because she’d had a Caesarian. She may have but the others hadn’t. Yes I was peeved … & still am three years later.) I had to leave after 2 or so hours. I couldn’t stand up any longer.

Thanks. I will play it by ear. I’m wondering about stamina post-op.

Could you book into a nearby hotel earlier in the day so you can rest up before the show ?

Great idea and then you wouldn’t have as far to go afterwards either. Maybe splurge and order room service. Turn it into a mini weekend getaway

...maybe skip the room service, unless it offers Protein Shakes

I would have been fine to sit in a theatre at two weeks out, but some people do have diarrhea, so be aware of that. Constipation is much more common. Make sure you bring a bottle of Water so you don't get dehydrated. Maybe allow yourself extra time for getting to the train and getting from the train to the theatre in case walking makes you tired, or your incisions are sore.

It sounds wonderful!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
