I had my surgery yesterday and got discharged to. liquid diet for 10 days. I feel pretty sleepy and my incisions hurt a bit, and getting up and down from sitting position os pretty painful, but otherwise going well.

It gets better! Just let as much gas out as possible…lol.

Is anyone else sick of so much sweet food from pre/post ops? It all tastes so bad to me at this point.

Yes, I hate all the fake, sweet stuff and I hardly have it anymore. I had broth in the beginning of the liquid diet, and Tomato Soup, mushroom Soup and very thin oatmeal in the second week.

It will get better every day. Just try to get the gas out.

So, after ten days, will you start on the pureed food so soon? I'm kind of jealous, since I have to do 14 full days of liquid diet. However, I'm glad I don't have to do 30 days like some people. But who knows, maybe their results will be better than mine.

Congrats! Walk when you can and take it easy the rest of the time!

Yes pureed for 4 to 6 weeks after the liquid, then soft foods for 4 to 6 more weeks, then I can eat regular food.

What kind of food are you eating during the puree stage? I'm supposed to start the puree stage next week, and not really sure what to do. I'm not meeting anyone at the clinic before the puree stage starts and the written program is a bit vague about this stage.

Purée has been really challenging for me. I had a really horrible dumping episode during my liquid stage when I ate some pho broth and since then, I cannot even look at a broth without feeling sick. I'm still doing a lot of full liquids like shakes, yogurt, and Protein puddings, but here is what I have added as purée:

refried Beans + taco seasoning + a sprinkle of low fat cheese

chicken salad (canned chicken, pureed + fat free greek yogurt + low fat mayo + celery salt + pepper)

mashed potatoes (the low sodium instant kind)

french style scrambled eggs (really runny) + turkey sausage (pureed) + a sprinkle of low fat cheese

sunny side up egg

egg salad (same as the chicken salad, but add a bit of pickle juice; eggs are pureed)

I'm not going to lie, getting past the texture & smell of the chicken salad was ROUGH, but it tasted good.

Yes! FInally got my date for my surgery! August 18th :) Hoping to find a surgery buddy to connect with :)

Day 3 post op update. Overall doing very well. Not much gas pain. I have only gotten sick once when the night nurse decided it was a good idea to give me crushed Tylenol without any nausea medication. Once we got that under control, I was able to take the medicine with chocolate pudding. I was discharged by noon the next day since I was walking well and holding full liquids down. Saturday was difficult because we had a six hour drive home and the road bumps played soccer with my insides. I'm pretty sore today. Getting my fluids and Protein down. I never knew how much I could love SF chocolate pudding 🤣🤣 Walking is harder today, but finally beginning to have a bit of bowel movement. Taking it easy.

Sorry to hear about the rough ride home, but I'm happy you're on the other side of it.

Is anyone else not sleeping well? Now, I no longer have any pain and the gas is not bothering me anymore. And yet, I don't sleep all that well. I keep waking up, and sometimes it takes a long time to go back to sleep. So, I sleep for 2-4 hours at a time, and I don't always get anywhere close to 8 hours a night.

I was so tired today that I kept nodding off sitting up on the couch. I'm supposed to start teaching the day after tomorrow, but I know I need adequate sleep in order to be able to do a good job.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
