Horrible acid reflux 4 days post op

Recommended Posts

I had my sleeve surgery on Wednesday. Don’t remember any of Wednesday, was throwing up and nauseous and in terrible pain Thursday. Friday I was feeling better so they sent me home. I kept complaining of waves of acid reflux, they kept telling me that’s normal. I am miserable. I’m taking the acid medicine they gave me, mylanta and Pepcid complete per doctor. Mylanta gives some relief but I still feel like I can take in much at all. I’m weak and drained and kind of second guessing myself. Never struggled with acid reflux before so why now? Is this part of the healing process? Any advice could be great.

I'd let you clinic know. A lot of surgeons put their patients on PPIs, like omeprazole, for 3-6 months after surgery. It tends to be stronger than things like Mylanta or Pepcid.

I messaged my doctor and hopefully I’ll hear back tomorrow because the pantoprozole they gave me isn’t doing the trick.

actually, pantoprazole is also a PPI (protein pump inhibitor). Yea - ask. Maybe they'll increase your dosage or try another drug. No sense being miserable!

Over the counter meds aren’t strong enough to counteract the extra acid your healing tummy is producing. They only work for ‘soothing’ heartburn. You need PPI meds that work on reducing the acid production & maybe a stronger dose as @catwoman7 suggested. You may only need to take them for a month or so until everything is healed.

I’m asking for a stronger dose. I’ve been taking 2 of the acid meds they give me when they prescribed me one and that has been helping a lot along with the mylanta. I‘ve had about 24oz of Water and still working. 2 oz of broth, half a Jello and a popsicle. I just do not feel like eating AT ALL. Strangest feeling.

I had pretty much zero interest in food for the first five months. If you continue to not feel like eating at all (and you might not for awhile), take full advantage of that! It'll never be easier to lose weight than when you don't give a flip about food!!!

Something else to keep in mind is to take the pantaprazole on an empty stomach. Let it sit for 30 minutes before you eat or drink anything. It works by stopping acid production but if it’s already stimulated doesn’t work. I have patients that prefer to take prior to bed because it helps with acid while laying down.

Ive noticed that. i was told to take it a half hour before food and i typically forget and take it around lunch time after i eat and i notice it does nothing basically

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
