Long term success

Those who have had the surgery in the past. Who all have kept the weight off? Have you stuck with the food plan perfectly? I eat a lot of pork now and some red meat. Are those foods off my diet forever?

I mostly eat to plan. My plan is my normal, daily eating style. I never counted calories or grams of Protein or ounces of Water.

I eat a lot of pork and a lot of red meat, though they are very much on my plan and always have been from day 1 post-op.

Nothing is out of your diet forever except those things you can't handle in moderation. There are also plenty of things that should not make a frequent appearance in your eating... well, at least my eating.

The weird thing of it all is I don't know why I have stuck to this plan for 18 years, but I could never stick to a plan pre-op. I have theories that involve sticking to plan and positive feedback, but it's not well formed.

But, my surgeon never had a concept of "after I lost my excess weight." The plan was forever.

seven years out. I lost 235 lbs and put about 20 lbs back on during year 3 (which is pretty common - most of us experience a 10-20 lb rebound after hitting our lowest weight).

there are no food restrictions once you get a few months out. Some people can't tolerate certain foods (I can't handle really fat-laden meals, for example), but nothing is off the table once you're out a ways. I can eat pork and other red meat with no problem.

Edited to add that I almost never went off plan until I was a year out. I'm not really on any plan anymore other than I still eat the minimum grams of Protein that I'm required to eat. I'm also cognizant of my calorie intake, but I'm not longer obsessive about it. If I eat too much one day, I just cut back a bit the next day. As long as it all evens out in the end and my weight is pretty stable, I don't worry about it.

Thanks. At this point im not sure what to expect. I've have a friend and client that just had their sleeve surgery. They have given me some info. I'm sure it's different for everyone. I go to my first dr appointment in a couple of weeks. I'm getting a little well a lot nervous about starting the process.

You must be on maintenance calories though right? I mean you can't be eating same plan as you must have been let's say in the very first 6 months or so.

Yes, I eat the same plan as I did from at 6 months. I've never counted calories.

Oh gracious no. I eat all meats (except offal - can’t do that) & seafood. I’m a carnivore. I was eating it from solid foods at week 7 & some in the soft food stage. Only difficulty is if the meat is too dry or too fatty but that’s easy to work around.

I followed plan pretty much always until I hit maintenance at 6 months & all meats were allowed. I then made small changes as I developed my own eating plan based on how I wanted to progress & what would compliment my lifestyle. There’s a lot of similarities with my plan though. I eat most things but keep my my sugar intake very low, keep carbs to two serves whole/multi grains (no bread, Pasta or rice) & keep fats relatively low. I don’t do fast food at all & rarely have take away (5x in almost 3yrs & carefully choose what I eat).

I’ve put on a good kg recently which I’m hoping is because I’ve upped my Protein & haven’t reduced other things enough to compensate - it’s a fine balance to ensure I still get in all my other nutrients. (I don’t absorb protein well since my gall was removed last year.)

I'm 7 years out and have done pretty good with keeping the weight off. I haven't stayed at my lowest but my surgeon said it's totally normal to gain some weight back.

I'm going in on Tuesday for a revision to bypass due to severe GERD. I'd love to drop and keep off another 25 pounds.

Tomorrow is my three-year anniversary. I stayed at my goal weight pretty easily for the first 18 months but gained about 20 pounds over the past year. I'm eating the same things as I did during the first year, but more of them. My diet is still high Protein, low carb, low fat, and no sugar (or alcohol).

I'm satisfied with my current weight, but now I really need to be careful to make sure I don't creep up. It's definitely harder than it was during the first 18 months or so, but I'll never go back to my old way of eating (nor anywhere near my previous weight).

I’m 3.5 years out. Started at 235 lbs. I’m a 5’2” 50 yr old female.

I stayed “on plan” (note: MY plan NOT my NUT’s) which was low cal (<800 cals), ultra-low carb (< 20g Net Carbs) throughout weight-loss phase.

I got to goal (127 lbs) around 7 months post-op and have stayed below goal ever since...almost 3 years. This morning i clocked in at 118.7 lbs

I no longer eat to any “plan” other than to try to stay under 2000 cals a day. I am about 90% successful sticking to this. I eat basically anything just not at pre-op levels…think like 1 to 1.5 cups at a time. And this includes Desserts, low-nutritional Snacks, fried foods, alcohol and lotsa butter, lol. I also eat my fair share of salads, so it’s all good. bread, rice, Pasta and potatoes are not regular foods for me, but only because these things sit heavily in my stomach and gets me super full super fast. Plus, I just don’t really crave them all that much.

you will find out what foods will work within your lifestyle as you progress.

Wow this is great to hear. I know that everyone's weight loss journey is didn't. I'm going to be self pay and that a lot of money to just turn around and gain it all back. So I'm really scared that I will fail.

I totally get that fear - I was self pay too and I think we just put extra pressure on ourselves not to 'waste' money on something that doesn't have a decent chance of success. I'm only 3.5 months post op but I am certain that this surgery was a good investment in my future health. It's up to me whether that investment pays dividends in the long run. I wish you all the best on your journey - stay here and you'll get so much good advice and wisdom.

And FWIW - I know I'm not long enough post op to answer your original question, but my partner lost about 50lbs some years back on Keto and maintains on keto - we eat meat at most meals every single day - all the meats! I just eat about 1/4 of what he does at a sitting these days. 😎

You are right, its going to be up to me on the success of my weight loss future. I'm starting to look into the keto diet and the meal plan. I do know the dr I'm going too does not want you to eat red meat or pork for 1 year. I'm not sure I can go a year with out red meat lol.

      I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

      Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

      Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
