Potatoes 5 weeks out

Recommended Posts

I did very thin mashed potatoes with Protein Powder in the puree phase, but haven't bothered with them since then. They aren't very nutritious and are VERY filling. But, if you're getting in all your Protein and still have room, you could certainly give them a try if they are within your plans guidelines.

I made picadillo (Mexican recipe for ground beef with potatoes) and had no problems with them.

Potatoes with skin on do have some moderate health benefits (high in potassium, Vitamin B6, Vitamin C and fiber). I wouldn't make them a meal by itself, but eating small amounts is not going to harm you and will help some.

I'm 3 years out and still don't tolerate potatoes well, whether they're mashed, fried, or baked I can only take two forkfuls and I'm done. Which is a good thing because nobody needs to be eating potatoes. 🙂

I'm 7 weeks post sleeve and I have had mashed potatoes since about week 3. Like a teaspoonful at the end of my dinner when 've had my Protein and veg. And I had half a roast potato at christmas. I'm Irish, I couldn't live a full life without them, but yes, even I would advise concentrating on more nutrient dense foods at this stage and having tiny amounts only as a treat food!

I’m a no potato person either (my dad was a potato farmer & is rolling in his grave). First they weren’t allowed on my plan through my weight loss phase. They’re a starchy vegetable & unless you burn off their calories after eating them they’ll turn to fat very quickly. On the coupe of times I’ve tried the odd bite or two in the last two years, I find they sit heavily in my tummy too.

During my soft food phase I was advised to eat mashes, like baked salmon with potato put in a blender! It went down wonderfully and I really enjoyed it. I’d say it was like 250g of salmon to one small-medium potato. Obviously no milk or cream added so you can freeze it in small portions!
I’ve eaten potato over a dozen times now after the soft food phase, I just incorporate it into the vegetable part of my meal. It’s delicious and so long as I eat slowly, goes down just fine and sits very well! 🤗

I have tried them and they go down fine but I try to stay away from them just because I know myself with carbs. I can’t eat just once. After I have them I crave them for days.

I ate mashed potatoes at that stage and added Protein powder and nutritional yeast. My dietitian also went on a rant about how the potato has been unfairly demonized and that potatoes are fine in moderation so I'm going with that.

I was going to jump in with a rant about the demonization of potatoes as well. Sure it's high in carbs but they are also loaded with Vitamins and nutrients. I'm unsure where people got the idea that they are of no nutritional value because it isn't accurate. Can you find those nutrients in lower carb options? Absolutely, but lets not trash the potato unfairly. A few minutes on google can expand on the details but I know they are a source of potassium and B6 as well as Fiber.

Anyway, if your body tolerates them they are fine in moderation. I'd focus on Protein first obviously but you can definitely try a little and see how it goes.

Thanks everyone. On the rare occasions I eat out I have really wanted to try a french fry or bite of mashed off my husbands plate but theyre excluded from my docs allowables, even at this stage. Just curious how it worked for others who arent on as strict a regimen.

I love the wonderful spud. Much better nutritional profile than any Pasta, rice, polenta you can find.

Did thinly mashed from soft foods, and I have one here and there. Fills me up nicely for few calories and there's minerals in them as well. The problem is obviously what people do to potatoes (poor things)! They're great just plainly boiled.

I ate potatoes at that point. But only a couple of bites. I'll be honest that post-surgery, I don't really like French fries anymore. (This is SO WEIRD.)

I'm making a mashed potato tonight for me and my sister, I'll have a couple of bites and be good.

I’ve had mashed and roasted potatoes. I haven’t tried fries yet. Hopefully I won’t like them when I do, but I doubt I would be that lucky.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
