Started preop diet today - any advice?

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone! I’m scheduled for 8/24 so I have started my preop diet today. While I have my paperwork which outlines everything I can drink and eat - do any of you have any personal advice that has helped you, too?

Luckily, my surgeon allows one meal per day consisting of 5oz of meat and 2 cups of veggies, along with a fat (ex: 1 tsp of olive oil).

Thanks! :)

No advice really, but just know that some people find the pre-op difficult for various reasons..fatigue, headaches, etc. You may or may not find it difficult, but if you do if you can get though the first three or four days the likely most difficult will be done with.

One way to look at pre-op is practice for post op...most people have a couple of weeks of full liquids following their surgery, then puree then soft foods. Compliance with, or near compliance with pre-op will hold you in good stead for post op.

If you lose a lot of weight pre-op weight loss post op may appear slow and lower initially but once the first few post op weeks are over post op weight losses are likely to be more typically.

I agree with Kermit - Just drink lots of broth and the week will pass fast You are lucky you can eat one meal

I didn't drink many Protein Shakes before my pre-op diet, so I purchased a bunch of samples of Protein Powder from various brands. This helped me figure out what I like, and it was also nice to have some variety. I got samples from IdealLean, 1up Nutrition, Northbound Nutrition Waves of whey, Strength, and KetoShop. Once you start buying Protein powders online, you'll start seeing ads for other ones. Just make sure you check the nutrition information and ingredients to see if they fit within your program's guidelines.

Good luck! It will be surgery day before you know it.

you're lucky you get to have a meal! I was on just Clear Liquids and Protein Shakes for two weeks. I'd say to white knuckle it and that it'll get better by day 3 or 4, but since you're allowed to have a small meal, you may be OK from the start (or at least more comfortable than those who have to suffer through a straight liquid diet!)

I definitely preferred ready-to-drink Premier Protein shakes to any of the Protein powders I had tried. I did all liquid for two weeks pre-op, and by the third or forth day I felt a lot better, probably because I had accepted that this was just the next step of the journey. And, like Hop_Scotch said, this is great practice for post-op life!

Good luck!! And congrats on your surgery date!!

Every time you start to feel overwhelmed, stop, take a deep breath, close your eyes and imagine your life at a healthier weight. What are the things you want to do that you just simply can't at the moment. Imagine yourself doing those things. Drink Water right at the time of the urge.

Those urges are moments, and all moments pass. Stay positive and keep your eye on the prize!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
