Yesterday my nutritionist and health psychologist approved me to move forward with surgery, so I got assigned a tentative surgery date of June 11th. I'm so excited!! I'm really fortunate that my insurance apparently does not tend to deny people who go through this particular program, but I'm still a bit anxious about that nonetheless.

liquid diet will be starting for me the day after Memorial Day... I feel ready for it, and have no plans to do much "last suppering", as it were. I'm so ready for this!

Congrats sweetheart!!!! Soooo happy for you!!! I have gained like 5 lbs this month I think because I changed my reading habits when I found out i had diabetes and did so well they took but now that I'm off of them all ive been doing is eating. Starting my new diet goal tomorrow then doing a 4 week liquid diet to make sure I can do this

My weight was down to 289 this morning but I definitely need to up my Water as my mouth and throat were dry when I got up

I went to the store and stocked up on sugar free popsicles and Jello.

I found budget saver brand popsicles are a really good price compared to the name brand and you can split them in half

https://www.budgetsaver.com/our-products/product/sugar-free-twin-pops/10

Are other people buying premade jello or the boxes? I bought a bunch of small round containers about the size of an individual jello cup and the boxes of sugar free jello mix

Congrats on 289! I woke up to 278 this morning 😁

I'm headed to the store today to get containers for my sf jello too. I've been using box jello bc it's so much cheaper.

Hello all, I may be wrong but after reading all of the comments, I believe I am the first Male in here. My name is James. I am 45, happily single with two kids grown and on their own, one with two girls of his own. Yep, I'm a grandpa. :( I will be going to Dr Illan at Bariatricpal MX, in Tijuana Mexico, on June 15. This will actually be my second surgery, I am doing a revision from VSG to the Mini Gastric Bypass. If any of you are interested I just FINALLY wrote my story in my profile if you're wondering why the revision. So most, if any, questions can be answered there. If anyone has any other questions, feel free to ask. Good luck to all on your upcoming surgeries and in your current battles with insurance. I refuse to deal with all the insurance bureaucracy so I am paying cash for the second time. i know most aren't able to do that, in fact I'm really not this time either, it is going on a credit card and I will deal with it later. haha My health is way more important than my credit score. Anyway, see you all around.

JamesL73,

Welcome to the JuneBunch. I am new here as well. I am just curious if you can answer this question or not... But what is the difference between a Mini Gastric Bypass and a regular Gastric Bypass? Anywhoooo......Welcome and wishing all the best when you journey to Mexico.

Thank you....With the RNY, there are two suture junctions (anastomosis) which is how they form the "Y". With the MGB, there is only one anastomosis. In an MGB done as an original surgery, they would leave the duodenum attached to the remaining stomach that is left after creating the sleeve, this would allow for the stomach acids to still flow down the intestine and meet the food further down. The newly created sleeve gets attached approximately 7 feet further down on the intestine. This MGB procedure couples the restriction of the sleeve with the malabsorption of bypassing the duodenum and most of the jejunum. This procedure is far less complicated for the surgeon, there are less complications health wise for the patient like bile and acid reflux that can be very common in both the sleeve and RNY. It is less time under sedation, as well as less recovery time, from what I have read. Now, the question I have yet to have answered from anyone is how this procedure differs in those of us who have already been sleeved and no longer have that remaining stomach attached to the duodenum, and therefore, no stomach acids flowing down to aid in digestion. If/when I find out, I will try to remember to update this.

I should add that, even though the MGB seems to be the far better choice over RNY, it is still fairly new and not yet approved by the FDA or the ASMBA (American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery) so there is most likely no US insurance that will cover it and also very few US surgeons who will perform it. It has become the preferred procedure of surgeons in Mexico and other countries that don't have all the strict bureaucratic BS to deal with.

And I think it tasted better and fresher. I made tapioca pudding, 1%milk, sweetened with Stevia, no eggs, I STILL can't handle eggs even in things. Too bad, I do make a lovely pseudo- omelet, scrambled egg thingie that Tomkitten just loves, either homemade biscuits or toast on the side and he practically purrs. I'm down to 214.6, over 100 pounds less than my SD, that was at 319. See it can be done, even for someone Old as Dirt (73) and before long you ladies will be joining me! Stay committed, stay righteous and it will be here before you know!

Found these at Grocery Outlet today. It was 2.00 for a 4 pack. I only bought 2 packs as I was with my husband doing our regular shopping but may go back on my own to get more.

Welcome to all my newbie babes!!!! How is everyone feeling for far? I have 37 days until surgery but who's counting lol. I start my liquid diet next Sunday because even though they only require 2 weeks I want to make sure my ass is on point with my health day of surgery. I've been working on a reward chart for each 5 lbs or so I lose and when. I get to 30 lbs lost, I'm going to see Manson and Rob Zombie again :D

Well I am still feeling a bit nervous. I am questioning whether or not I have made the right decision. I keep telling myself that I come this far and there is no need to turn back now. Anyways, I have been approved so it is like having a blank check.... I just have to get through the clearance hurdle and hopefully my nerves will calm down. Tomorrow, I will attend my pre-op education class, so I will come back let everyone know what went on. So until tomorrow, have a great rest of your weekend.

The JuneBunch😄

Thank you lovely!! I'm actually debating doing a slightly longer liquid diet as well, though I haven't decided. I worry I'll start it early and then curse myself for doing so after my surgery when I'm missing real food 😄 But it helps that I've found some surprisingly tasty shakes to have, so I actually find myself wanting them. Decisions decisions!

You've totally got this though, even if you've had a few off days. It's the home stretch now to meet the new tool waiting for you! *cheer*

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
