This may have been discussed before but for newer people I wanted to bring it up again...but I checked with my insurance company (Blue Shield) and if my doc writes a prescription for my protein my insurance company will cover the cost. I dont know how long or how much but Im definitely going to be asking for a script when I see him tomorrow for my pre op. Whatever portion they're willing to cover is fine with me! It never hurts to ask right?

My doctor has said that she does not write prescriptions for protein drinks, nor for vitamins. I'm okay paying on my own, because I figure I will still be spending less than I spent on food before surgery (including many meals in restaurants).

Saw my doctor yesterday and he said he didn’t know he could even do that. I talk to somebody at the insurance company so I know for a fact that it is true that they cover it. I think it will save me at least a couple hundred dollars

I have BCBS Highmark and they will not cover it because it's considered a food product.

I've never heard of insurance covering protein. My surgeon wrote me a prescription for soft-chew vitamins, but my insurance doesn't cover them, so I'm buying them out-of-pocket at GNC.
