Need to be at the hospital at 530A. Surgery is at 730A. Nervous about anesthesia, procedure complications, post-op pain...pretty much everything. Leaving it in God's hands. I praying that I'll be ok.

I was a nervous wreck before my surgery..panic attacks, second guessing myself and all that jazz. You can even see some of my posts on here documents my anxiety about everything.
Had the surgery 5 days ago and everything went fine. There was pain but nothing unbearable. Not sure what your pain management will be but I was so out of it from the morphine, I dont even remember what happened between the time they knocked me out to the time I was waking up in my room 7 hours later.
I wish you well!

Surgery was Monday morning. Got home yesterday afternoon.

Post-op pain is manageable. The only intense pain is around an incision that was stapled into the muscle. Not having any trouble with swallowing. Started adding stool softener to liquids to avoid Constipation.

All in all, I'm happy to be on the other side of surgery.

And I wish you good reports,on every thing TODAY. I am a month ahead. of you, more healed that is debate-laden. Had life and shelter problems, my diet is not all it should be, it's just before 6 Am , woke up, and trying to decide what to do first. Think I'll call and leave message at local Furniture bank, critcal need for additional furniture. Had to leave former housing, could not move beds, son trying to sleep in one remaining chair, feet propped up on pillows, I am in recliner, at 72 I have 2 artificial knees, I cannot sleep on floor, still recovering from bypass surgery, slowly because I have a stricture, on brothes, Protein Shakes, strained Soups, fluids, Vitamins, zofran, Wellbutrin, carafate, omeprazole, magnesium, ditropan( for urinary spasms) carafate( along with structure I have gastro intestinal ulcers). Had to move Early Friday, morning, scramble to find housing, to keep eviction court case off my records and that,of my son's who was been legally punished for only living with me, I was supposed to seek alternative housing. And oh I struggled, I am over 65, my son has medical issues which preclude working outside my home, so you could say he is medically disabled , and we have 2 cats, have for 6.5 years, a great joy and stress reliever for us a both. Being as i am widowed and on Social Security, I am paid once a month, and no I cannot and will not forego the other 3 , they are my little family. Did not receive my monies until November 2nd, took last little bunch of my ready cash to rent dumpster to dispose of 18 years accumulations of items, and inheritance from both in-laws,parents, son (who died tragically at 31) and husband who died 6 years and 4 months ago yesterday at age 70. With help of family friend who came up with deposit on you-haul 🚚 my son, friend, and i, remember because of slow healing I am still on weight restrictions, packed it with what possessions we could, canned foods 75% of which are beyond my diet currently, a small amount of clothes for Son and I, minimal furnitures, no beds, no table, 3 resin outdoor chairs, are you gainingng pictures in your mind? Couldn't get possession of new place until after I could withdraw money from my bank account, so we had to move truck to parking place outside new place, me carrying pet tote with 2 cats inside, thermal tote with Protein shakes inside, had hoped to go back and strip remainer,of fresh and frozen foods from refridg, New landlord was furnishing stove, fridge, washer and dryer, had made arrangements to have electric company to haul off old fridge for $50 rebate( which I could sure use the money from once I could empty it) but would have to leave old stove there. Had. called evil, landlord to beg for an extension until today so I could move, out the rest of my things. Nope, he refused even although I offered to relinquish to release my keys to him personally instead. of giving them to agent to pass on. So I lost 85% of my food stuffs, my winter coats, a good portion of my clothing, the remainer,of my furniture, and you begin to see my sorrows. Never had a written lease, established a relationship between my dead husband and that landlord's dead grandfather many years ago, I believe 1993 on a Gentleman's Handshake, lived in another of their properties 1993-2000 and in this one 2000 on. Now he is alledging we caused the property to deteriorate to point it does not meet health codec when it simply was due to his failure to repair anything Bottom line, I usually walked in fear I would go through floors, shut doors gently, it is,nice to once again have solid floors, insulated walls Windows that don't shake with every breeze, and no leaks. Didn't have a real chance to tell Post Office or Cable company of move so cut off from outside world. If I can't see Postman going by and I mail change of address form, it may be up to 10 days before I can receive any back mails. When I tried to access cable company with no landline or internet access I was told they have not updated service to this location for years and would not be able to send installer/service person until this coming weekend. Drat Spectrum! Every time the former Time Warner upgraded the price got higher and the service did not improve. All I have to access the outside w9rld, 2 Tracphones with an unknown amount of minutes and data and this Verizon which is paid until December 2nd, on monthly Plan. Why am I burdening you people with all this? Because Frustr8 needs a friend, even the clergyman at my denominational ⛪ doesn't know men new since I last attended. Good thing thing God still knows me and loves me. So help, do I have friends left?

Frustr8, you have a friend, well-wisher and sympathetic shoulder available from me. I haven’t posted much because I am very early in the process but as another well-aged gal (67) with a drive for transforming the years I have left, I have enjoyed & giggled with you on your journey. You have a tough set of circumstances but your strength and faith shine through your postings. Very best to you from a white dragon (the good kind, not one of the biters!) who is also battling to get her fires re-lit.

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
