October 2018 Sleevers

Recommended Posts

I’m a wreck. I’m supposed to start liquids today and I’m totally unprepared. I had my brothers wedding this past weekend so was so busy with that that I had no time for anything else. I guess I can start tomorrow but am just dreading it. I am now rethinking the whole surgery because I’m so scared. Just having an overall bad time.

Sleeve Scheduled for 4 October. Will be in hospital for ca. 5 days, at least 2 weeks off work. Doing this because of comorbities (BMI "only" 35). Pre-op diet is so boring. I miss crunchy foods! there are only so many carrots you can eat. Here in Switzerland my doctor/center I don't have to do liquids before the surgery, just basic no-carb, low fat, high Protein. some veggies allowed. Things are really different from the US regimens even after surgery I think.

I would like to update everyone on my pre op liquid diet because I posted a couple days ago freaking out. First I am going to say if I can do this you can all do it!! I think we are all similar in som way to our issues with food but trust me I thought I was going to die. I cried and cried and cried the day before and the day I started. It hasn’t been easy but it is getting easier!!!! First day I think I was in shock! I went through the motions not realizing what the hell I was doing. Days two and three I struggling baddddddd. My body was clearly detoxing from all of the crap and I was feeling it. Day 4 I was super emotional and didn’t feel great but not as horrible as day 2 and 3 but was still upset because I didn’t think t was going to get better. Yesterday was day 5 and today day 6 and at this point it would be ridiculous for me to “cheat”. I can’t believe I’ve come this far. I can’t stay on a “diet” for two days but I can do full liquids for 6 days???? My doctor requires full liquids and nothing with chunks at all, not even Soup so he is pretty strict. I’ve lost 8 pound and my surgery is in one week. I also have a husband and three kids that i grocery shop for And cook for. It has been a challenge but is getting easier every day. You can all do it trust me!!!!!

Oh bother, it won't let me edit the older post, with the list of surgery buddies. But I'm updating my list and will post it again in a few days! (For those of you who just got here, scroll up, and you can see if you have surgery buddies who share a date with you. Oct 1, 2, and 4 are especially popular days!)

My update: in an attempt to maybe make the liquid diet (starts Wednesday) easier on myself, I went ahead and cut out carbs, besides the ones I get from broccoli and cauliflower and the little bit of milk I put in my tea and coffee. If I can get into ketosis before I drastically cut my calories, maybe I won't be so hungry. I'm making sure to get enough salt (mmm, dill pickles, I will soon miss you) and to hydrate really well, to help ease the transition. I've also been taking walks (short ones--my arthritis is not better since I've had to be off my meds and supplements), which is supposed to help with "keto flu," too. Whether that will matter or not remains to be seen, but I feel good about doing something to try and help out future me.

We've got this, friends!

I've started a list to help people find their surgery buddies. This is supposed to just be sleevers, but I bet some others snuck on. It's supposed to be all the October sleevers, but I'm 100% sure I missed some, and some don't have dates yet. Let me know if you aren't on the list and want to be on it, or if you're on it but want to be, and I'll edit this post! (Please please please don't quote the whole post; just type "@CrankyMagpie" to get my attention. I mean, also, I'm following this thread, so I'll see it even if you don't @ me.)

Hi All! Newbie here with a surgery date of Oct 16th. I'm so excited, but also nervous...and anxious. I am also starting a little early with eliminating carbonation, caffeine, taking lots of Vitamins, etc. Hopefully being prepared will make the transition a little easier. On one hand, I feel like I should enjoy the next few weeks of "freedom" while I'm still able to, but on the other hand, I'm just ready to get it done and over with!

kdiddle, what type of work do you do? Just curious, because I told my surgeon I'm in accounting and he said I would likely only need a week off.

I'm in Human Resources and I work from home. My doctor told me to take 2 weeks off, because of my body and mind going into a transition.

I am officially an October sleever no more. I was diagnosed with sleep apnea during my sleep study, so now I have to wear the CPAP for 30 days and receive a clearance for my pulmonary doctor before I am cleared. My follow up with him is the end of October; therefore, I will more than likely end up in November baring nothing happens with my EGD tomorrow. I am really low key disgusted, but it is what it is. I can't even take my class while i log my 30 days using the CPAP... I really wish I could, and at least it would be out of the way, but...I can't. It has been my pleasure being amongst you Octobers ;-) Best of luck to you all!

I'm so sorry for the delay. It must be frustrating. I'm holding a good thought for pulmonary clearance.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
