Light Headed when standing

Recommended Posts

Okay so I’ve lost 140 lbs in total... 100 since surgery in march...

i get very light headed when standing though... sometimes worse than others... sometimes I get the whole tunnel vision thing... anyone else experienced this? It’s not every time... but almost very time I stand up out of the recliner or get out of bed too fast... does it go away with time as my body gets used to my new found mobility?

This happens to me, I'm just short of a year out. I just strike a Charlie's angel type pose till it passes (a few seconds) :)

I had this for at least 2 months every single day. I upped my Water intake and that only helped minimally. Asked the surgeons office and he said “that happens sometimes” and if my blood work was normal (it was) everything was fine. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I found that answer super not helpful, but it did go away shortly after.

So often! I find it happens more later in the day typically. Not sure why, I'm in and out of my chair at work all day long... at home later on though, I get off the couch and things start to get fuzzy.

I do too.... just just a second or two . Typically at night and when I get up quickly . I assume it doesn’t happen during the day BC I’m up and about more often.

Congrats on your weight loss! :) I started to experience this same thing 4 weeks post-op. Come to find out my blood pressure was VERY low. After losing significant weight, I no longer needed my blood pressure medication. So grateful for my sleeve!

How's your blood pressure? It sounds like it may be low.

Good luck. You are not alone.

It is likely orthostatic hypotension (as in low blood pressure) and as you see above, is fairly common with rapid weight loss and the body needing to adjust to having much less of it there to maintain. If you are on any blood pressure meds, they need to be reduced or eliminated (see your doctor first!) If you are not on any BP meds, check with your doctor on other methods to counter the problem (other than "don't do that"!) Some suggest increasing sodium intake (the opposite of common advice for controlling high BP). Eventually, your body will usually adjust to its new normal and you won't notice this anymore.

Related issues that you may encounter is a low resting heart rate, which again is the result of having cardiovascular capacity in excess of the body's normal need (many athletes run into this, too.) This can sometimes cause an apparent arrhythmia as the body has secondary back up pacemakers that kick in when it decides that the primary isn't going to do its job. Again, check with your doc if you experience any of these "common" things to ensure that they are indeed just the benign result of your weight loss and nothing more serious.

Good luck and congrats on your success!

Low blood pressure may be the culprit, check with your physician for other factors . This happens to me when my pressure is around 90/60

That's crazy you passed out. Hope your all good and things get better. Please keep us updated on your outcome/diagnosis. I wish you the best. I also have this happen to me and feel it is related to BP and BP meds. As the weeks have gone by it has been happening more often/more frequently. I find it happens in the hours after I take my BP meds. Right now I'm taking 2 different meds because my BP was not coming under control with just the one. This was of course pre op but I have not seen my PCP since before surgery so not sure if my meds need to be adjusted. I will put in a call to her if things proceed to become more frequent.

Have a great Wednesday too! Sorry you're hungry all the time, I'm pretty much the same..and I'm sick of eating the same food all the time.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
