Summer 2018 Surgery Buddies: POST-OP Discussion

Recommended Posts

Hello. Sleeved Aug 15. Down 48 post surgery, 63 since pre surgery diet. Went from size 22 down to 16. Still nauseous and throwing up sometimes. Not tolerating most meats, eggs, or tuna. Still struggle to meet Protein, liquid, and exercise goals. Happy about the weight loss so far but nervous that the honeymoon period is going to end before I am fully in a routine of hitting those daily goals and then of course it'll be extra hard to get to a completely healthy weight. I haven't given up though.

Nice loss! Keep fighting the good fight! I’m starting to wonder if the intolerance for tuna is common? My new tummy can’t handle it either. Also the eggs don’t agree with me either

Thanks. My nutritionist said that all of my food intolerances are very common. Plus side patients also have issues with dairy. Thankfully I'm good with dairy.

i just started a 3rd job so needless to say i’ve been back on coffee for a little over a month now. it’s fine for me, but i’m able to drink liquids with no issue and have been since the start so staying hydrated is relatively “easy”. the caffeine has been fine for me though, i wouldn’t be too scared. but maybe start with a weak coffee if you are nervous and then work your way to the good stuff

Hello all! It has been a long time since I have posted. I am a little over 4 months out. I was sleeved on July 23rd. I have quite a bit to say, however will keep this post short and post on my blog later regarding my progress. I started back drinking regular coffee after my 1st month out. However, I did encounter some issues with cramping, nausea, and diarrhea. I had to go through a period of elimination to figure out if it was the coffee or something else causing the symptoms. Needless to say after several trials I found out with great sadness that I am now lactose intolerant due to the surgery. It has taken quite a bit to finally find a dairy free Creamer that both myself and my pouch will tolerate. I do not drink much coffee unless I am going hard with studying. I drink plenty of Water using a variety of Crystal Light flavors. I cannot wait to share my weight loss journey with you guys later! Stay tuned! Hope everyone had a great holiday season.

Hi everyone, still here moving slowly along. Down to 165 from 229 sleeved July 30th. I’ve had a few stalls here and there but the inches keep moving so I’m trying not to focus on the numbers, because I feel GREAT!!!

Hope everyone has a great New Year🍾🍾

Happy New Year everyone!

I don't post a lot, I kinda lurk. But I love hearing about everyone's process and progress! I'm 5 months post op tomorrow! I can't believe how much time has already gone by!

I'm currently stalled out, I blame letting too much sugar back into my diet over the holidays. I think I'm still losing inches though, and hopefully the scale will start moving again soon.

Hope everyone's New Year is of to a great start!

Happy New Year! And the time really does fly! I was stalled for almost 2 months. My surgeon’s office said it may be caused by monotony in the diet and to try new things here and there. Awesome that you are still losing inches!

I was 6 months post-op on Jan. 3rd. Time sure does start to fly!! I am 114 pounds down....and having to always be on the lookout for cheap smaller clothes, because I am shrinking out of them so quickly. I started in a size 28 and now in a 20, and headed closer to an 18! My wedding rings are almost too big and in danger of falling off. No complaints here :)

Oh and I went to the gym yesterday and I didn't die! LOL

Ooo that's really good to know! I have been eating the same things and doing a lot of the same work outs. Maybe I should mix things up a bit!

Thank you!

That is AMAZING! CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! You're rocking this change!

I'm going through the clothes thing to a lesser degree. Only my clothes with elastic in them still fit at all. The second hand stores and hand-me-downs are my best friends right now.

Wow!!! 114 lbs?!?! Amazing!!!!

I had my gastric bypass on 7/30. I’ve been hovering between 65-67 lbs down for the last month or so...I’m really hoping to bust through this plateau sometime soon!

Can I just add: PLATEAUS ARE STUPID AND DUMB EVEN IF I KNOW THEY ARE NECESSARY AND TEMPORARY.

This one is also my fault...WAY too much bread and cheese meals lately. I’ve been hovering around 214-216 for the last month though and working out a bunch so I think my plateau should just go away by now. Feeling whiny today!!

🥺🥰🥺🥰

I have been hovering between 230-228 for like the last month. When I stall, I stall good and hard. I try to focus on how far I’ve come, but it certainly is a bit jarring when the honeymoon ends. I’m down 74 since surgery, 111lbs since last January. That’s a feat, I know, but I still feel like goal is so far away.

Also- today I am hangry- so there’s that.

Plateaus, They are the worst!! Even if they're a natural part of this process. I'm questioning Everything I eat and obsessing over everything. Can't wait to get off the plateau!

It sounds like you're both kicking butt!! But I am right there with you loathing the stall.

I havent posted here forever or bothered updating my stats. I am almost 4.5 months post op and my weight loss seems to have slowed to a barely moving pace. When did all of you start slowing down? I am down 100 lbs from a year ago and down about 70 from surgery. I keep bouncing between 210-213. I just want out of the 200s and feel like its never gonna happen!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
