I think we should know things like... not to drink alcohol or eat bread at 1 month post op. Those things are common sense. And those are what get under my skin.

Soo ... I actually had bread and alcohol, and so much other stuff at 3 weeks out. BUT, I knew this was not wise. I didn't come here asking if it was a good idea, I knew it wasn't. And I took full responsibility for the gain I had that week, and if I had had any other complications for it. I think it comes down to accepting personal responsibility.

You didn't ask Mommy or Daddy. You just decided to accept the spanking if it came your way ;-)

Mostly I agree with everything you said, but in one sense I think this is completely outside the doctor's control. I sat thru several pre-op nutrition classes and forums where other soon-to-be patients played on their phones or tablets and didn't learn a #$@% thing. You can't cure stupid. The information was being discussed, they had the opportunity to ask questions and they wasted it.
I had to take several online courses and at my preop class I was told 3x... read your material a minimum of 3 times. If you have post op questions, refer to your pre op material. Personally, I've done that and refer to these forums for help.

P.s I've enjoyed your rants....

My favorite is when can I eat fried foods and crap again? This just pisses me off. To me I say NEVER. We love food. A little here and there and then oh lets just skip lunch and buy a bag of chips. Hello people this is what got us to needing weight loss surgery. Are chips good for you? No Is cake good for you? no Is fried chicken good for you? no. Fuel your body with good food not empty calories that will make you hate yourself in a year and believe me it happens. Don't think about what can you go back to eating. You should be planning what good foods you will be eating.

But this won't work for everyone. My goal is to live a balanced life, not one of only grilled chicken and celery.

We all gained our weight in different ways and for different reasons. For me it wasn't about indulging in an over abundance of fried foods for instance.

So far I have been successfully losing weight with a balanced approached. When I get to maintenance, and I have less restriction, and I have more hunger, it may not continue to work. But I'm willing to reevaluate my plan at that time and become stricter about what I eat, if that's what it will take to maintain a weight I'm happy with.

We all want a balanced life but I know I can not eat sugar ever if I do then I will just keep eating it. We are all addicted to food. Even if you think you are not addicted to food. I never said anyone had to eat chicken breast because there are so many wonderful recipes out there you don't have to just eat chicken.

Yeah, y'all are right; there's definitely individual blame to be shared, too. And, yeah, a couple of my doctor's nutritionists are just awful and probably not 100% qualified to be in the position they're in.

I do wish there were more even education for everyone undergoing this process, though. (I want an online course! That'd be helpful!) It's truly upsetting how many people rely on internet strangers' opinions for important health information and decisions.

I'm not addicted to food either, these journeys are not all the same...

You guys need to be careful, you're precariously close to being a curmudgeonly vet...

I've gotten there as well... it sure does not take long when you are serious about your own health...

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
